Shawn was rested on the passenger seat with the recliner downwards. One hand clutching to the arm rest, the other nearly in the cup holder.
A cute little echo was becoming abrupt. "Shawn?" I called out poking him. He didn't answer. I looked at the radio where his car was placed in a slot beneath it.
The phone presented, "Fiancé Tay." I don't have a choice but to ignore it. The call went to decline and moments later it rang again. I decided if he calls one more time then I will drop the news. And he does.
"Hello, Shawn? Where are you." Taylor speaks blunt and direct. Almost out of frustration instead of fear.
"Shawn's not here right now but I'll leave a message." I say rather professionally.
"What did you do to Shawn?"
"He chose to be here."
"Who are you?!"
"Sorry. I don't have time for you to yell at me through the phone. Shawn is sleeping aside me as well. I'll tell him you called later though, Fiancé Tay." I said it like one of those fake white girls from drama movies who try to make friends even though they hate them.
I mean, I don't hate Taylor but I kinda like the connection Shawn and I have, as friends. And if I want Shawn to continue to cruise with me, he can not be convinced by his rich executive boyfriend.
I smiled to myself and just before I could turn the radio up Shawn speaks, "Good way to let him down easy."
"What?" I said, not aware. "Didn't think you were awake."
"I am awake. I heard everything from the first ring. Testing you if you'd answer or leave my stuff alone. You failed." I started to have a rough grip on the steering week out of guilt. "Sorry if I lost your trust."
"No it's fine."
Shawn slouched as he let his head rest on the window.
"So! Mr. Mendes, now that your awake I was wondering if you wanted to get dinner. Like nothing fancy now because really want to keep on track so we can get there in two days but would you like--"
"Drive thru?"
"Haha. How'd you know? Yeah I was about to ask you which drive through you want."
I enjoy the connection we have. And I want to keep it. It's like a friend to business type of thing but we're leaning on toward moreover as friends. I never had company so I'm not sure if Shawn's company is good or if it's just that I don't have anything to compare him to.
I drove us to a Panda Express and there wasn't a drive through so we had to walk out. But I offered, "I can get the food for you." I held the ignition. "Oh. Want to just share a three item to go box?" Shawn smiled weakly. I nodded.
I got to the cashier and I spot the cutest guy in the back, stacking up cups and restocking the containers so it would be easier to package good.
"Cameron? I've been calling you. Can I get the orange chicken?" Shawn poked my cheek, letting his finger fall into my lips. "Oh my gosh haha, yeah... yeah...." I got closer to the counter and ordered, "Three item of fried rice, orange chicken for this boy, and uh- uhm... I'll have a uh.." The guy from behind stood against the meals, getting ready to package, "Oh stir fry broccoli is good if you want that." He suggested.
I glanced at the meal he was pointing at and I nodded. I observed him get the food. I guess I was looking too long that Shawn end up paying for the meal. One of my hands grabbing the bag from the employee and the other hand occupied by Shawn clutching my bicep. "Come, Cameron.. get a drink."
"Want to eat here?" I asked. Maybe it's a chance to look at this guy a little longer. "Yeah. Can you ask them for soy sauce? He didn't give us any."
I gladly nodded and went over to the stand, still pretty nervous. "Hey umm.." I looked at his nametag. "Hi Nash. Can I get some soy sauce?" He nodded and handed me some. "Okay, Cameron have a nice day." I smiled at him knowing my name, "How do you know?"
Nash started doing an awkward chuckle, "Come on... your boy over there called you Cameron like twice. Heh..." Nash scratched the back of his neck. "I'm just going to say this really fast! I live like three or four states away and I really want your number! Or snapchat!" I say in a rushed awkward tone. "Oh...easy. Just look in the back of the receipt I gave your friend." He emphasized friend and I nodded and shook his hand before leaving over to Shawn.
"Took longer than I thought.. why?" He frowned taking the sauce from me. I scurried to look for the receipt. "Where's the receipt Shawn?" I asked. "Oh I didn't ask for one." I rolled my eyes and looked back at Nash all he did was smirk.
"How's the meal?" I asked, faking my happiness. Damn. Nash just basically rejected me. "Oh it's really good. Here try my chicken!" I was about to grab my own spoonful but before I could look down and open my fork his spoon was already by my lips. Slowly he let me eat what was left on his utensil. "Aw. It's sweet!" I laughed.
"Hey. I'm full and I'll just finish some in the car. Refill this will you? I wanna get cozy in the car. Can I get the-- nevermind, just unlock the car. I don't want you to think I'll leave with your cab." I couldn't help but always smile at Shawn's wittiness.
I went to refill the drink that had two straws and visit Nash before I could leave. "Hey.. what happened to the number?"
"Dude. I'm not messing up your relationship. I don't do that. He looks happy with you. You're going to mess around with someone like me?"
"Oh gosh! I'm not dating him. We don't even know each other." I over laughed.
"Sure. Seems close and connected with me."
I left the store thinking about how some stranger thought that Shawn and I were a couple even though we were strangers ourselves.
