“Get out now!” Jared demanded. I glanced back at Ian, mouthing ‘sorry’ as I reached for the door. “Now, Ashlyn!”

Getting out of the car I glared at Jared, “Stop it, Jared. We were doing nothing wrong.”

“Oh, dry humping in the front seat of the car, parked on the side of the road in broad daylight, with kids gawking at you constitutes nothing wrong?” he seethed.

I glanced around for said kids. Two little girls stood watching the drama from the next yard. Rolling my eyes, I focused on my brother again. “We were doing nothing wrong, and I can’t believe you would think I’d be caught doing something like that. You know me better than that. Thanks for showing me what little faith you have in me.”

Turning back to Ian who stood leaning against the door of his car with his hands in his pockets I couldn’t help but notice how sexy he looked. Taking the step back to put me in reach, I stood on tip toe to kiss his delectable mouth quickly before saying goodbye, and rushing into the house. I could hear mutterings between the two men, but I didn’t care to listen at that moment. As quickly as I could I headed up to my room, slammed and locked the door, and threw myself across my bed.

Not thirty seconds later I heard banging at my door. “Ashlyn, come on, open the door.” Silence stretched. “Ashlyn, please, I’m sorry.” Closing my eyes in resignation I got up and unlocked the door. Without a word I turned flopping back onto the bed.

“Silent treatment is that it? Guess I deserve that. Look, I’m sorry I overreacted, but you’re my baby sister, daughter of my heart.”

Sighing heavily a glared at him, “Dang it. You know I can’t hold a grudge against that.”

He gave me a small sad smile, “that’s partially why I say it.”

“And the other reason?”

“You know I’d die if anything ever happened to you. Like it or not you’re my responsibility and I will protect you from all I deem a threat.”

My eyes narrowed, “no one ever said that I was your burden to carry, and Ian’s not a threat.”

“A responsibility I gladly put upon myself. He’s probably the biggest threat you’ve ever come across.”

“How is he a threat?” I exclaimed.

“Broken heart, pregnancy, STD’s, delinquency, poor grades, shall I continue?”

“Honestly! You insult me every step of the way. Fine, you have no trust in me. I get it. I’ll prove you’re wrong. My grades won’t suffer. I’ll have him submit blood screening to you. I’ll buy some condoms, and I’m still a virgin, and he knows I’m not ready for that, thank you very much. If you’re done you can leave.”

“You forgot,” Jared stated in a small voice after a moment.

“What?” I asked harshly.

“Broken heart,” he said quietly.

I softened at his tone. “You’re too late where my heart’s concerned. We’ll just have to wait and see on that one.”

Jared took in my rigid stance with my arms tightly wrapped around my torso. Exhaling he looked to the ceiling. After a second he relaxed, walked over to me, and pulled me into a hug. I stayed tense.

“I’m sorry for being an ass. I know you’re a strong smart young woman. I just don’t want to see you hurt. I know you’re not an irresponsible brainless twit. I don’t mean to say that you are. And I know that you’ll take care of yourself. I’ll try to relax when it comes to Ian. He cares for you, I can see that, but I worry. Please, just be careful.” Slowly I began to relax in his hold. At the end of his little speech he kissed the top of my head before looking down at me.
