I woke up in the morning feeling sick to my stomach with the excitement of going to a new school.
I hopped out of bed and went straight to my closet to find my new dress that I've been waiting ages to wear. It was all orange and white vertical stripes, which flattered me very well.
I happily put the dress on along with other basic toiletries and went to brush my teeth in the bathroom. When I was done, I skipped down the stairs to my awaiting mother with breakfast sitting on the kitchen table.
"Morning, Mom!" I said cheerily as I sat down. Though she took very little noticed of my over-happiness. I began scraping food from the plate into my mouth in a hurry.
"Morning, Honey. Are you ready for your first day at school?"
"Sure am!" I said with a mouthful of eggs. She smiled at me.
"I'm finished!" I announced about 15 minutes later.
"Good, because you bus'll be here soon." my mom said. I quickly hopped off of the chair and ran to the front door where my mom was waiting for me with a backpack and new shoes.
I took the shoes from her and velcro them onto my size 3 feet. I stood up straight again and grabbed the backpack from my mom's hand and slung it over my right shoulder.
"Bye mom---" I said trying to make it out the door before she could have the chance to give me some stupid lecture.
"Not so fast Haley. Do you remember what I told you on the plane ride over here?" she asked.
"Yes, Mother. Don't talk to the black boys." I repeated her previous words with disgust.
"But Mom, why can't I----" I began.
"No buts! Now go before you miss the bus." she said, hurrying me out the door. I rolled my eyes when she couldn't see me. I began walking down the driveway.
"Have a nice day Honey!" she said as she shut the door. As I was walking down to the corner I mumbled things like 'the nerve' and 'I'll be friends with who I want' until I reached the bus stop.
No one was standing there besides me, so I looked around, clueless, wondering if I was at the right corner.
Just then the bus came out of nowhere and halted in front of me. After I climbed up three small steps to get on, I saw everybody. And apparently they all saw me too because it seems as if the entire bus went silent and 40 pairs of eyes all flickered onto my face. I flushed a deep red and hurried to an empty seat in the back. Or what I thought was an empty seat at least.
There was another girl there who had blonde hair and a Beatles backpack next to her. She was also wearing army green pants and a yellow tank top. She didn't acknowledge me at first, so I spoke, "can I sit with you?" I asked her.
"Yes." she said in a high voice, it didn't match the tomboy charade she put on.
I sat down and looked at her for a second, "I'm Haley Bradford . . . wanna be friends?" I asked her. I was a very straight-forward person.
"Sure...... my name's Emma Simpson." she said with a soft smile, turning towards me. When she talked in a full sentence I noticed that she had a slight redneck accent I believe.
"So where'd you come from?" she asked me, suddenly interested.
"San Fransisco, back up in California." I said.
"Oh that's cool." she said smiling, "can you tell me about it?"
We talked for the rest of the bus ride about random stuff, and we got to know each other a little better.
When we pulled up at the school we got off of the bus and walked into the building.
It was huge! I was almost positive that I wouldn't be able to find my classroom. But a very nice woman came up to me and Emma, and she pointed us in the right direction, so we were alright.
The schoolday seemed to breeze by. I don't even remember half of it. It was basically just a bunch of blurry faces and names which were so common and easily forgettable. It seemed that the 5th grade was going to be a piece of cake.
Also, I met lots of people who's names I do remember, like Victoria, Danielle, Lauren, and obviously Emma. Her outside was much different from her inside, and that was something I liked about her. I learned that she wasn't the most popular kid ever so I guess having each other would be good for us.
Finally it was the end of the first day at Lincoln Elementary. The bell just rang, and everyone was going crazy to get their things and get to the buses.
I nor Emma rushed because we decided just to walk back to our houses, it was only about 8 or 9 blocks.
Once we got our stuff together we headed out the front door of the building and began our journey back home.
