The Next Day

In the morning I went down to my bus stop early, hoping to catch Michael before my mom could see me talking to him. Luckily, he was there, sitting Indian style by himself on the sidewalk. I walked over to where he was and sat down next to him in silence.

"Hi." he said smiling.

"Hey." I said. I exhaled and leaned on his shoulder. I felt him tense up a little when I did, but then relax in the same second.

"Are you okay?" he asked me.

"No."

"What's wrong?"

"Long story short, yesterday my terrible mother said I couldn't talk to you anymore."

"Why? We haven't even known each other for that long; she can't say she doesn't like me." he argued.

"It's not you, it's . . . it's your color." I said quietly as I looked at the ground.

He was in silent shock for a minute, "she's racist? Are you too?" he asked, looking like he was going to cry. He must be really sensitive.

"Oh, gosh no! I love everybody! And if I could change how my mom is than I would, But she won't even tell me why she doesn't like black people, and I've asked her a million times but she'll just call them a name and change the subject . . ." I said trailing off.

We were both silent for a minute, then Michael leaned his head on top of mine.

"Well it's probably better that we don't hang out too much anyways." he said glumly.

"Why? It's fun, being friends I mean. And you make me smile." I accidentally let the part slip out.

"I know. I like being your friend too, it's just that . . . well, we're leaving a week before Christmas."

"Huh? I don't understand." I said sadly.

"Remember when I told you about the band and stuff? Well, yeah, it's getting a lot more serious so now we have to move to Los Angeles to get even bigger." He explained.

I inhaled deeply, "the band, what's the name?"

"Jackson 5." He answered.

After that we were quiet until the bus came.

When we got on we still sat next to each other, but remained almost oblivious to the other person as we thought about what was said.

"Are you guys in a fight or something?" Emma asked us a few minutes later.

"No." we said in unison. She shook her her head but said nothing else the whole way there.
