As we walked home, we talked more about our personal interests, as well as other topics of lesser importance.
We arrived at a park on the way, so we decided to stop and go on the swings for a minute or two.
We had a swinging contest, although it was a tie. But then again it wasn't serious competition either.
When we finished we continued walking the last few blocks back to our houses, when all of the sudden a boy ran up in front of us and made us stop.
He looked about my age, maybe a year older.
His skin was dark, so I knew my mom wouldn't approve of him already. He also had a short afro; despite what you would think it flowed in the wind a little. Lastly, he had on a Mickey Mouse t-shirt and basketball shorts, though it was getting chilly already from the slowly setting sun.
And I don't care what anybody says, he was actually pretty good looking for a 10 year old.
"Hey Michael." Emma said after a few seconds of silence.
"Hi Emma, I see you made a new friend." he said in a high voice.
"I'm Haley." I said without thinking. His eyes flickered to me, they were such a deep chocolaty brown that I almost was lost in them by a mere couple seconds.
He picked up my hand and kissed it gently, "I'm Michael." he said sweetly. He quickly dropped my hand and I blushed as red as a firetruck, without saying a word.
Just then another boy who couldn't have been that much older came jogging over to us, "ahhh Michael, I see you're tryin' to be smooth with the ladies, eh?" he said to him. Michael laughed, "just being a gentlemen like Mama taught me." he said proudly. I smiled at his response. Emma looked at her watch, "oh, Haley we gotta go! My mom said she wanted me home by 4:30 and it's already 4:17!" she said, sounding a little worried.
"Relax! Our houses are right down there, remember?"
" . . . But still." she pleaded.
"Well bye." I said, though I was mainly speaking to Michael. He smiled at me, "bye."
"Bye!" Emma said as she took my hand and began pulling me along the sidewalk.
I looked back and snuck one more brief glance Michael, who was watching us go.
When he saw me looking he winked at me, I looked away before he saw me blush deeper than before.
"Emma . . . I don't feel so good . . ." I said, although I was smiling. I had a bad case of the butterflies.
She looked back at me, her eyes widening. "Oh Haley . . . you don't look so good either, your face is tomato red!" she said.
"Wait a minute; you think Michael's cute, don't you?!" she asked, putting the pieces together.
I didn't respond, I just looked at her and bit my lip.
"Haley's got a crush!" she said in a sing-song voice.
"Shh, don't scream it so loud!" I said covering her mouth with my hand. She licked me so I would move it. "Fine, I won't tell anybody . . . if . . ." she said smiling evily.
"If what?" I pressed, slightly worried.
"If you kiss him before Halloween." she said.
"What? You've got to be kidding me! Do you know how gross that is? And besides, I've never even hugged a boy before." I whined.
"There's a first time for everything." she argued. I thought about it for a moment, "fine, I guess I'll do it." I said, secretly excited on the inside.
"Good, it's settled." she said as we came to a stop on the corner we had to part on.
"See you." we said in unison. We hugged each other quickly, then ran off in opposite directions.
