Chapter 1

The Discovery

BEEP! BEEP! BEEP! I groggily slapped my alarm clock and slowly got up. Today was the first day of school and I was NOT excited. I walked slowly to my closet, picked my clothes, pulled them over my body, and dragged myself downstairs. I lived in a big two story house with my adopted parents. I called them mom and dad because they took care of me for as long as I can remember. I started to make toast the way I like it with lots of butter and grabbed my bag. I got into my red Prius and started my drive to Gregory Parks High. When I got there Lila was waiting in our usual spot by the side of the school on a little flowered bench. 

"Hey," I said. 

"Hey, aren't you ready for school!" she said sarcastically.  

"Yay" I replied as I rolled my eyes did small jazz hands to top it off. 

"So what are your classes ?" 

"Mine are Physical education, elective, science, language arts, history, then math. You?"  

" CRAP! We have no classes together!!" She said. 

The bell rang and we walked towards the gym for our beginning of the year assembly. It was always boring, not because it was 2 hours long, but because the principal said the same thing over again each year. 

I was on my phone for the majority of time but at the end the principal said ,"Lila James, Skylar Lopez , Ali Harris, Emily Graham, Damon Cruz,Zach French,and Bob Sanchez please come with me right after the assembly." 

Lila and I looked at each other in a confused way, and waited for each row to be dismissed. 

We slowly got up and made our way down the bleachers trying to walk normally because our legs were asleep. 

We walked to the office as fast as we could because we only have 10 minutes to get to class. Gregory parks was a big school with 3 stories. When we got in the principal office I saw a girl that I've never seen before . She had long brown hair and brown eyes. She smiled mysteriously and said, "Good afternoon everyone, please follow me into the next room." 

The rest of the people came in the room. I knew most of the people except for Bob and Damon. The principal came in shortly afterwards and told us all "Thank you for coming." 

He then said.. 

" I just wanted to tell all of you that you are not in trouble." 

I heard 1 or 2 people sigh in relief. 

"This may sound weird, but we have been watching you and all of the kids in this school, and we have picked you all to become spies in The Underschoolers program." 

"WHAT?" Lila said. 

Katarina looked at the principal showing him she didn't want to explain, but he just shook his head, and walked out of the room. 

"Hi, my name is Katarina. I have been in the underground school program for years. I just need to know now that what I show you, you will never...." The bell rang and right after she continued," tell anyone. Ok?" 

Everyone said nodded their heads in agreement. 

She got up from the desk and said,"Follow me." 

All the kids got up and followed her to the 1st floor vending machine. 

"I hope none of you tell because we can make your life miserable and you will see why in a minute." 

She pressed the sprite soda button on the vending machine and put a card on it with a picture of her on it, probably an ID card. 

Then a little message popped and up asked for "formal confirmation." She put her hand on the panel and it said ,"access granted." There was a loud click and the wall moved right next to the machine. Katarina walked in and told everyone else to follow.  

I whispered to Lila " no wonder I could never get a sprite..." 

We walked down narrow stairs and we got down the stairs... My jaw dropped and I said ,"What the..."
