"What's wrong with you?" I ask sliding into a bar stool next to her. "Having girlfriend issues?" I tease playfully nudging her in the side.
She doesn't respond to my questions and only motions for the bar tender to refill her glass, once he does she knocks back another scotch.
"Come on Anna, talk to me, what's going on?" I ask growing nervous since she's never acted like this in all my years of knowing her.
She turns toward me and I'm taken back at her appearance, hair frizzy, clothes wrinkled and make up disastrous, even her eyebrows are off their on point game. "Nat.....I'm dying." She grovels looking at me with pained eyes.
The look in her eyes confirmed the answer to my unspoken question that this was no joke or prank. This was reality and with that knowledge, in that cold bar in downtown Toronto I swear I could see my whole life die before my eyes.
"What's going on with you?" I ask voice shaky trying to fight my tears.
"My liver is dying and my heart is failing." She says motioning to the bartender to fill her glass again.
"Your 26! You're to young to die!" I scream at her.
"I know but there's nothing I can do Nat. My life ending is inevitable." She says slowly drinking this scotch slowly out of her glass.
"THIS IS BULLSHIT!" I scream pounding my fists into the counter. Everyone in the bar turns and stares at us but currently I don't have two flying fucks to give about the possibility of me wrecking their evening.
"How do you think I feel Nat, because if you haven't forgotten, I'm the one that's fucking dying!" She yells at me and I grow quite because she's got a fucking point. "Oh god.....all my years of schooling wasted...and I'm never going to walk Charli down the aisle.... Or threaten Sammy's significant others when I first meet them......everything I've ever wanted gone.....in two seconds flat..... Why do all the bad things happen to me?" She says breaking into fits of heart broken sobs and I pull her into a side hug.
"So what do we do now?" I whisper after her sobs die down and me processing my thoughts and letting this whole messed up situation truely sink in.
"I don't know, Natasha Negovanlis, I truly don't know." She says staring at the bottom of her glass possibly hopping to find all the answers to our questions hidden on it.
But the answers never came.
