I met Annalise Camp when she was 21, and six months into being the first youngest female news anchor for the CBS Evening News.
The cast was invited to the studio by Anna's boss who thought it would be good for Anna to join our posse because we were a non political group tv series. We tried to tell him countless times that the correct term was webseries but he brushed us off. At first I didn't want to work with her since she looked unprofessional and looked more like fan material than cast material.
Sure she looked professional; dressed to the nines, hair and eyebrows on point and stylish pumped gray Adidas kicks adorned her feet adding some style to her navy blue suit and tie. However her posture and actions told a whole other side of her. She was sitting behind the big news desk with her feet propped up and playing a 3ds XL , preferably Mario cart judging by her endless flow of mumbled curses and godamnits.
"We're doing the presidential debate tonight so that will be interesting." John, her boss says grinning at us as he escorts us to our seats.
I study her skeptically because if she's going to be acting like this during the debate than yeah it's going to be interesting. As the camera man starts his countdown I watch wide-eyed at the transformation of her from unprofessional to professional in two seconds.
"Good evening from the CBS News Studio in New York, New York. I'm Annalise Camp, head News anchor at the "CBS Evening News," and I welcome you to the first of the 2019 presidential debates between Governor Andrew Johnson, the Democratic nominee, and former Massachusetts Governor Carson Edwards, the Republican nominee.
This debate and the next three -- two presidential, one vice presidential -- are sponsored by the Commission on Presidential Debates. Tonight's 90 minutes will be about domestic issues and will follow a format designed by the commission. There will be six roughly 15-minute segments with two-minute answers for the first question, then open discussion for the remainder of each segment.
Thousands of people offered suggestions on segment subjects or questions via the Internet and other means, but I made the final selections. And for the record, they were not submitted for approval to the commission or the candidates.
The segments as I announced in advance will be three on the economy and one each on health care, the role of government and governing, with an emphasis throughout on differences, specifics and choices. Both candidates will also have two-minute closing statements.
The audience here in the hall has promised to remain silent -- no cheers, applause, boos, hisses, among other noisy distracting things, so we may all concentrate on what the candidates have to say. There is a noise exception right now, though, as we welcome Governor Johnson and Governor Edwards." She says and the crowd goes crazy and seemingly unmanageable however she raises her hand and they immediately grow quiet.
"Gentlemen, welcome to you both. Let's start the economy, segment one, and let's begin with jobs. What are the major differences between the two of you about how you would go about creating new jobs?" Anna asks with a professional tone staring both of the older men down like they were children.
"Before we get started, Miss Camp, I would just like to say you are looking lovely this evening." Governor Edwards says with a sickening fake smile.
"Your question, governor, brings up another thing, don't sweet talk me and don't flatter me too. Whatever your press releases told you about me forget it because that's a waste of time, because I don't like teachers pets. Also the note cards in your pockets won't help you either because we won't talk about any of those topics I just mentioned. Also I have an earbud in and if I find any flaw in your argument or source I will call you out on it. Because during this whole debate we have people looking up everything you mention to see if your arguments and sources are deemed unflawed." She seethes and the govener cowers back like a child who got scolded by their parent. "Do I make myself self clear?" she asks and they both nod.
"Then let's get started, shall we?" She asks cracking a grin.
In that moment of watching her stare down men 20 years older than her, I knew Anna and I were going to get along great.
