It's been a year since she disappeared and when he was admitted into the nut house. I visit them every now and then but, it doesn't really help with anything... I walk past those woods every day on the way home but I've never stepped foot in there again. Whenever I get a chance to visit Brendan, it's hard to ask about what happened to him during the days he was missing. Every time I bring it up, he starts screaming and breaking down. Yelling things like "I'M NOT CRAZY -- IT WASN'T A MONSTER -- SHE ISN'T DEAD!" It was kinda hard... Rori drew back from us and changed to homeschooling. James stuck around for a bit before telling me "Don't follow the lights. And never, go back into those woods." Shortly after, he moved states and I never heard from him again.
A close buddy of mine just asked me something that was gonna get him killed later out of the blue "Hey, what happened last year in the woods?" I swear, I just turned my head real slow and glared into his soul. "Don't. Ever. Mention. That." I'm pretty sure he got the message and nodded his head. It's unbearably hard trying to talk about last year.
Once school ended, I just bolted out of there. I kept running until I reached those woods behind my house. Standing a few meters away from the first line of pine trees, I closed my eyes and took a deep breath. Ba-dump, Ba-dump, Ba-dump. The smell of pine needles blew into my face as the sound of familiar footsteps raced around the inside of the forest. Then they stopped. Opening my eyes, I stared straight ahead of me and I saw it. And it saw me.
