CHAPTER ONE

Vanessa's P.O.V

"Happy birthday to me, happy birthday to me, happy birthday dear meeeee! Happy birthday to me!" I sang to myself.

Today, July 8th, is my 18th birthday. It would be a fun day, but neither of my parents are home (they're actually out of the country), and the friends that I do have are all out of town celebrating there last spring break before college while I'm stuck here in Florida working.

My parents are visiting my uncle Pete. A week ago, he married a woman who just happens to be 13 years younger than he is, and she's from France. I would have been with my parents visiting Pete and his new wife Jacqualine in Paris, but I'm being forced to stay at home to "hold the house down" and work, even if it is my 18th birthday.

But, enough about my family, let's talk about me now!

My name is Vanessa Johnson, and, as stated before, I'm 18 years old. I live in Orlando, Florida, and I work as one of the minions outside of the 'Despicable Me' attraction Universal Studios Orlando.

Every weekend (and some weekdays now since it is summer), I have to get up at 6:00 in the morning so I can drive like a maniac to get to my job in time. Having graduated in this past May, I thought I would have been done getting up at an hour as ungodly as six, but nope, my father just had to get me a job so I could help pay my college tuition.

Don't get me wrong though, I love my job. I'm just saying it would be a lot better if I could come in at around nine instead of six.

Well, that's pretty much my life, besides for all the eating and tweeting I do during my spare time.

A loud grumble snaps me out of my daydream of being in bed and sleeping, and I realize it's my stomach begging for food. I walk to the fridge and open it to see what food I can eat today.

I'm pretty disappointed to find that all we have is a tub of butter and some some salad dressing. I mean, it's my birthday for crying out loud! Shouldn't there be a cake in there or something? Right. My parents aren't here. Well I guess it's my fault for not buying anything, the fridge was stocked right when my parents left for France...

Seeing as I didn't have any food (unless I wanted a butter and salad dressing sandwich), I grabbed the keys to my dad's "car," which is actually just a piece of rust on wheels, and decide to drive around and find some place that serves decent breakfast food.

~~~~~
After driving around for a while, I found this nice little coffee shop called Quoffee. They had a giant neon sign in there window that said 'PANCAKES,' and I mean, who can go wrong with pancakes? I really do love pancakes, especially when they have fresh strawberries and mapple syrup drizzled on top...
I park my car in the parking lot across the street from Quoffee. I'm almost about to run across the street to get to my pancakes faster, when I trip over my shoelace and fall face first onto the sidewalk. I guess it was a good thing, for had I not tripped, I would've gotten run over by the 18-wheeler that just drove past. Phew. That really was a close call.
I picked myself off the ground and tied my shoe. This time, I checked both ways before crossing the street, and would you know it, another 18-wheeler drove past me before I could cross the street. This road really is busy.
I made it to the other side of the street and step inside the coffee shop. It has a nice homey feeling, and I walk up to the counter and order some strawberry and maple syrup pancakes. After ordering, I take a seat at a booth in the corner of the shop that's right next to a giant window. I take out my phone and connect to the shop's guest WiFi. As my phone's connecting to the Internet, I take a look out the window. Another 18-wheeler drives by! Wow, I guess this road must conect to i-95 or the Turnpike or something of the like. I gotta give props to the owner of Quoffee, he or she picked a really great place for building their shop, considering all these trucks going by. Truck drivers have got to eat too you know!
Once my phone has connected to the WiFi, I open the one app I only go on when it's my birthday. Facebook.
The first thing that pops up is a status from my mother. Sarah Johnson: having a wonderful day in Paris! - With Jacqualine Johnson and 2 others
I mentally sigh and roll my eyes. Does she need to rub it in my face? I shrug it off and look at my notifications.
19 people wrote on my wall for my birthday! Wow, am I popular or what? I'm just about to reply when the waitress calls out my order, "Pancakes with strawberries and syrup!"
"That's me!" I yelled out in reply. Yes, my pancakes! I'm starving!
The waitress walks over and sets the pancakes down in front of me. By the time she arrives, I'm practically salivting like Pavlov's dogs when they hear bells.
After I thank the waitress and she leaves, I lick my lips and hungrily eye the stack of pancakes in front of me. I'm just about to take a bite when I hear my phone buzz. I groan and flip mute the call, not even bothering to check who was trying to contact me. I pick up my utensils again, and right as i put the delicious pancakes in my mouth, my phone starts to buzz, this time playing my ringtone, Over Again, as well. Damn my iPhone for allowing calls even after turning it on Night Mode.
I set my utensils again, and pick up the phone.
"Hey mom!" I say as happily as I can muster. It probably doesn't sound all that happy, and I don't even care. She interrupted my pancake-eating time.
"Hey Vanessa! Happy Birthday!" she greets.
"So, you didn't forget my birthday?" I sneer.
"Erm, of course not! Who would forget her daughter's 18th birthday?" she asks with a nervous laugh.
"Okay, well never mind. Are you having a good time in Paris?"
"Oh, it's such a wonderful city! And Jacqualine is so nice!"
"Well I'm glad one of us is having a good time..."
"Come on, Vanessa! It's your birthday, now cheer up! Oh, I almost forgot! Your birthday present-- There are a pair of keys in the kitchen's junk drawer. All you need to do after you get them is go into the garage."
"Am I getting my own car?!"
"Maybe... But, I have to go now sweetheart. Have a great birthday! Drive safely!"
"Bye m-" I start to say, but the three beeps signaling the end of a call have already sounded. However, not even my mom can get bring me down now; I'm getting my own car!
I quickly grab all my things, throw a $20 onto the table, and run out of the shop and out onto the street. I completely forget about my pancakes, just like I forget about how busy this street was. By the time I hear the horn honking, it's already too late.
I turn around, and the last things I see are a pair of headlights shining straight onto me. After that, I think you can guess what happens. And if you can't, well let me just tell you: I die, right there in the middle of the street on my 18th birthday.
Isn't that just fucking fantastic?
