Chapter Twenty-One... Sarah's Secret Is A Secret No More

Cameron was pretty stressed. He'd gotten a call from his sister Sarah. A call that kind of scared him a bit, and he wasn't sure what was going on. But he was taking off to Australia with Lance, to help Sarah...

Only thing is, he didn't know why.

"Cam, what is it?" I asked as he hastily began shoving clothes into a suitcase. "Where are you going? And why?"

"It's Sarah," he said breathlessly. "She's in some sort of trouble... with some guy named Derek."

"Derek?" I frowned. "Oh, God..."

"Rose?" Cameron frowned. "What is it? What do you know?"

"He's the reason she moved to Australia," I sighed. "She broke up with that Brad guy so she could move to Australia and live with this Derek."

"But... how do you know that?" he asked.

"Well, she told me," I answered simply.

"Rose, honey?" he whispered, now standing in front of me. "Why do I have the feeling that there's more to it than she just left to live with him?"

"Well... uh... I promised her I wouldn't tell you," I gasped. "But... you've never asked about it before. Never mentioned it. So please don't hate me for keeping this from you, Cam."

"What is it?" he questioned.

"They're married," I breathed.

"Married?" he frowned. "What... what do you mean?"

"Well... Two years ago, when we went to visit all of the family. Sarah was just about to move to Australia. And Brad had proposed to her. After four months of dating. And she turned him down because she was already married to this... Derek guy. He's Australian, and asked her to live with him. They have been together for almost four years!"

"They've been married for that long?"

"Yes."

"And you knew about it?!"

"Only the last couple of years. Look, Cam. She didn't want you to know. Okay? She'd planned to keep it a secret and they would have a proper wedding, not a Vegas wedding."

"Oh, I remember when she went to Vegas. With that Vienna chick I never liked. Sarah was so weird when she came back..."

"I'd forgotten about it until you said about Derek then."

"You... you forgot my baby sister got married? Oh, I wish she'd tell people stuff like this! Always been a secret keeper! Suppose she's probably got an army of kids by now, the way she is. And none of us would know."

"So... you're not mad at me for not telling you?"

"No. I'm made at Sarah for not telling me. I could be mad at you. But I'm not. Because it wasn't your secret to tell."

"Yet I told you anyway..."

"Because your reaction to Derek's name threw me off."

"So... why's she in trouble, Cam? What's going on?"

"I don't know. But she called Derek her boyfriend, and well I rang Lance and he'd gotten the same call from her. Distressed. Guess she wants her big brothers around now."

"So both of you are gonna what? Go over to Australia and beat the shit out of this guy?"

"No. Well, I'm not anyway. I'm not a violent person, honey."

"When it comes to family, people do some strange things, though."

"Yes, but I'm not about to beat up some guy I've never met. Not unless he lays a hand on my sister. Then Lance will take the first swing. If he's not out cold then I might have a hit. But I'm still not keen on the idea."

"Okay..."

Cameron finished packing clothes, toiletries and some money before grabbing his passport and running downstairs. He placed his suitcase on the floor at the front door, and the kids all came over to see what was going on. Emily was laying on the floor, laughing at the television.

"Daddy, where are you going?" Lily asked.

"Yeah, dad," Becca frowned. "What's with the suitcase?"

"I have to go to Australia, to visit Aunty Sarah," Cameron explained. "I'll be gone a few days. I've already rang work, and my boss is fine with it. He reckons I need holidays, anyway."

"When will you be back?" I asked.

"I don't know," he sighed.

"Can we go too?" Zane asked sadly.

"No, buddy," I whispered. "You have to stay here with mommy."

"But I don't want to," Zane cried, tears streaming down his face.

"This is hard..." Cameron admitted, hugging all of the kids goodbye. "This is really hard."

"Mom, we wanna go too!" Addy wailed.

"So do I, but we can't," I said, tears welling in my eyes too. "We have to stay here. Daddy won't be gone for too long, guys. He'll be back."

Cameron gave the kids another hug, and Emily cried when he walked away from her. She was six months old now! Time had flown! Then Cameron returned to me, where he took me in his arms and our lips met.

"Don't be gone too long," I sniffled. "I'm gonna miss you."

"It reminds me of the days when Becca was little and I used to travel for work all of the time," he smiled weakly. "But they were only overnight trips."

"And Becca hated it," I sobbed.

"I love you, Rose," he smiled. "And I will be back as soon as I can."

"I love you more," I cried, and we kissed again.

As Cameron drove out of the driveway and up the street, I had six crying children. Becca disappeared into her room, and Lily and Addy both huddled up on the lounge. The boys both sat unusually silently in their bedroom, just staring at the wall. Emily...well, I managed to calm her down and put her down for a nap easily.

That night it was a struggle to get the kids to bed. Emily had a restless sleep, and I didn't sleep at all. By two in the morning, I was on the phone to the airlines. All the kids had passports, as we'd gotten them a couple of months before ready for our family holiday to England for Becca's ninth and Addy's sixth birthdays. We had everything booked and ready, and we'd be going for three weeks. Our first day there would be Becca's birthday, and our last would be Addy's.

But now we'd be making an additional little holiday. To Brisbane, Australia.

Cameron and I had both always wanted to go to Australia. And now the kids and I were going to surprise him. And our flight left at seven in the morning. So once I'd gotten our flights, I quickly packed a bag for each of the kids and put the bags in the car. Then I packed my own stuff, plus some extra things for Emily. I woke Becca and Addy up first, and put them in the car with Emily, who was still sleeping. Then I got the boys up, and miss Lily, and grabbed all of our passports as I swiftly moved to the car.

I had an hour's drive to Seattle. After that, we'd be flying out to Australia. The kids were all excited as we drove off, even though it was three thirty in the morning.

I couldn't wait to see Sarah again. I couldn't wait at all. But I was missing Cameron like crazy, and hoped that everything was going well over there.
