Chapter Six: Kent

Kent Foster ran down the street, as the two men in black chased him. He wasn’t doing anything illegal. Oh no. Kent was just in trouble. What trouble that was, he didn’t know. Ever since the night his little sister Emmy was raped, these men had followed him. He tried to do what the books said, when being stalked. Look at the guy’s face. But these men wore glasses. Sunglasses. It didn’t look odd. It seemed to always be sunny when they followed him and he was sure they did that for good measure; so they wouldn’t be watched closer.

He did see one of the men’s eyes. They were purple. Obviously the men were clever enough to wear colored contacts so he couldn’t identify them, and every time they had different colored hair. But he was sure it was the same men. The sunglasses had an “s” on the side. What that stood for, he again, didn’t know.

Kent ran behind the nearby Walmart, watching as the men looked around, and eventually shrugged, stepping into a nearby limo, and driving away. He breathed a sigh of relief. He was safe. For now.

Kent made his way home, taking the shortcut throught the forest he was sure only he knew about. He finally reached his home. It was fairly large, but then again, everyone at school was rich. It wasn’t anything impressive.

“Kent?” Called out a soft, scared voice, as he opened the front door to his home. He sighed. He recognized the tome. Emmy wanted to make sure it wasn’t anyone else coming into their home, to hurt her. Ever since that day he decided it was okay to let her go for her first sleepover, he had regretted it. Emmy and her friend Selena, had snuck out, thinking they were going to go to some innocent party. Like any normal teenagers, the girls wanted to kiss some boys, and get drunk.

When college boys appeared at the party, the girls thought nothing of it. They were even excited. For once, Emmy felt grown up, and independent. When the alcohol  was in everyone’s system, no one knew what they were doing.

So no one realized when a little girl was taken by some guys in black.

They had raped her, beaten her, and left her bloody on the Foster’s doorstep. Kent cried that night. He cried so much for being stupid enough to let her go to Selena’s house. No matter how much Emmy tried, she was not allowed even a single phone call to Selena after that night. Kent was in charge now, and his parents probably liked not having to take care of their children.

For the longest time, Kent blamed himself. Nothing anyone said had any effect on him. It was his fault, and he knew it. So he did what any deppressed, sad man would do. He turned to drugs to wake him up in the morning, to keep him up, and to put him to sleep. Pills ran his life. He had a collection. Every shape, color and size. He had them all. No one knew. He still set all the rules, and took care of his traumatized younger sister.

But even she could see that haunted look in his eyes. He wasnt there. He was never there. It was only when he found himself in the hospital, stomach being pmped out because he overdosed, that he realzed this was a problem. But by then it was too late to just "change his ways".

He was sick. By taking the pills, he had missed the fact his head was hurting, and his skin was pale. Kent was dying. The doctors werent sure what to call it, but they were sure he was going to die in a year or two.

"Yeah, its me Emmy." Kent called as he walked into the TV room, to see his little sister watching cartoons.

"Good." She whispered, smiling at her older brother. Emmy loved him with all her heart.

But she didnt know, and he wouldnt tell her. She wouldnt know he was sick until he was dead.
