2. World Building
Complexity:
Let’s be honest. Stories are complex. It’s a fact. Shoot me.
It’s just one of those things that make you want to buy a gun and thus make Obama mad. I mean, really, when I’m trying to start a story, it just takes FOREVER. But do not lose hope, my fair writers! There is a light at the end of the tunnel (that isn't heaven), it just takes a while to get there (in which you can get lost in the darkness.)
Every single one of these seven things (hah! miley cyrus!) has complexity.
SO, first of all, what genre is your story? Depending on the genre, the questions will vary. If you’re writing fantasy, CONGRATS! YOU HAVE THE MOST QUESTIONS TO ANSWER! Yes. You do. It’s sad. But have fun while answering them and be creative. Oh, and don’t make vampires sparkle. Please. One time was enough.
Some questions you need to answer (besides fantasy genre people. I’ll get to you later) are:
-Location
-Climate
-Geography
-Animals
-General spacing of places (like in a city everything is close together but in rural areas it’s spaced out)
Yeah. You don’t need to know every single detail about these things, but you do need a general idea or else you’ll have polar bears in South America. Bad idea.
The poor fluffy things would overheat and spontaneously combust!
Anyways, where was I? Oh yeah, fantasy people. You guys have a LOT more questions:
-World
-Physical features
-Rules of Magic
-People Culture
-Daily Life [of people/creatures]
-Social
-Any other animals and their customs and daily life
That’s the general idea, and this link will tell you more deets: http://www.sfwa.org/2009/08/fantasy-worldbuilding-questions/
(Note: If you’re doing Sci-Fi, you should also generally follow the fantasy questions. And add this one: how does [insert scientific thing] work?)
P.S. Make sure to actually use these points in the story. If it doesn't quite fit: throw it out the window! Don't be afraid to make major changes.
