It was a cool, nice day on the moor. A Summer breeze, and dandelions blooming everywhere. You had to have sharp eyes to spot it. It was just a faint outline that looked like a tree. The buck. The buck is leader of all the deer. The does and fawns would pay attention to him. His mate, did not exist. He did not have one. All he cared about was his little herd.

"Ashes, could you stop it?" Leader Buck asked.

"Sorry," The little fawn apologized. "I'm just really excited to leave hunting grounds. It's so scary there! And I couldn't help but jump around a little bit." Ashes explained.

"We'll be excited in your mind and heart. We don't need a little fawn jumping around us all the time." Leader Buck replied.

"Well, okay..." Ashes said.

The two deer were silent the rest of the way.

"Mama, why am I grey and all the other deer seem to be brown?" Ashes asked.

"Because you are special. Every deer is different. You might just be Leader one day." Mama replied. Mama'a real name was Leeria, after her great grandmother, mate of the Leader Buck before the new one, who's name was Rho. The new leader'a name is Bark. Not Bark after the dog bark, but because his pelt is the colour of bark on a tree. Ashes was ash grey, with cobalt blue eyes. Leeria was light brown with deep green eyes. And Bark, he was the colour of maple tree bark, with pale green eyes. No matter how colour blind the deer were, Ashes was different. He wasn't colour blind. He could see colour perfectly. But he thought every other deer could see in colour. Ashes also didn't know that he would be important, and would save the herd.

The deer ran off as the men shot their guns. The deer were all going crazy, and no one knew where Ashes was going; until Leeria saw he was missing. "Ashes! Ashes come back!" She screeched. But Ashes was too far away to hear. "No...he'll get killed by the kill-shooters!" Leeria whispered to herself. Ashes kicked his legs up at a man and the man dropped his gun.

"Yes! He dropped his kill-shooter!" Ashes said triumphantly. Ashes started kicking the men and soon the men ran off. All the deer stopped and stared at him. "What?" Ashes asked.

"Only... Leader Buck V could do that... And Leader Buck II tried it and failed. Ashes will be the next Leader. He will be Leader Buck VII. I'm sure of it." Leader Buck, (Bark) murmured. The little fawn kept staring with a "what?" Look on his face.

"Nothing sweetie." Leeria soothed.

"Okay." Ashes sighed out, relieved.
