Ashton scanned the aisles looking, searching.
But what he wanted wouldn't be found here, she wouldn't be seen idly dancing through these aisles anymore, but all that remains of her were the memories she left, the ghost of her remained here.
The trolley was seething under his grip, burning his hand as he held on tighter in fear that if he loosened his grip everything would fall apart. Just as it did that one night two years ago.
The horror of it hurt, both physically and mentally, the strain on his brain was bullying, driving.
The world had been very unkind to him, after all he had been a very good boy until that night, done all his chores until that night, he never touched a bottle of alcohol until that night and he spoke until that night.
The anger and pain of it all left him mute. He simply had nothing to say to anyone anymore, so he would sit silently on his bed and drink away his problems, the salty tears of his guilt rolling down his yellowing cheeks.
And then a petite lilac haired girl approached him, her features pressed into a smile, "Sir are you alright?" Her voice concerned and full of sweet sympathy.
He stared at her, his eyes boring into hers and he simply carried on looking into them. He wanted to to scream that he wanted help, scream that 'the world was fucking with him' and in the distance he could see her, her bright eyes danced about as did her body, she threw herself about in the narrow aisle which occupied only her and him.
Her hair flew about behind her as she grabbed his hands to move about to the supermarket songs, it was Christmas, yes that was clear to him.
The bright lights were strewn lazily about the place, mistletoe hung about and the Christmas cheer was what hit him the most, Amy loved it, she was an enthusiast. The paths her past took her, well she had to be, with all that she overcame it pushed her to a greater life. A happier one.
The jolly Christmas tunes played softly from the speakers, her smile won him over and the two danced with tinsel around their necks and warm jumpers hugging their bodies.
It was perfect he remembered.
She was mesmerising he thought, the way her eyes held so much passion and the way her fingers moved about so delicately on the back of his hands, he loved it.
But they were friends, anything more than that would fail to satisfy either of them, he loved her, of course he did, and she too loved him. The idea of the two being together intimately, humoured them, they knew each other for a very long time and they didn't want to severe that bond.
Nothing happened between them, only their friendship blossomed in the pet food aisle of the supermarket.
"Well Sir the supermarket will be closing soon,"
And just like that he was back, back to the reality that failed to please him, that failed to give him the will to live.
And so he nodded, a lump formed in his throat and he left, leaving the memories behind, he was told it was best to not open old wounds.
He put the empty trolley back and stood in the brisk night air under a London sky, the moonlight casting an ill pallor across his face.
