Day 156 in the Scorch. Or at least that's how long it had been when I started counting. I couldn't believe my brother Andy and I were still stuck with nowhere to go. I was sure we weren't the only people left on the planet. Cranks don't count though, they're not exactly...people.

You see, the earth is now a desert wasteland. The sun has scorched the world and W.I.C.K.E.D is in control. I've seen their helicopters fly over the city a few times but Andy always hid me. He didn't want for there to be even the slightest chance that any one of us could be taken. But a few years later it wouldn't even matter.

It was day 200 in the Scorch (again, just an estimate), and my brother and I had just gathered more supplies. I had found a gun with a few bullets in it but we weren't sure if it could still shoot. We didn't want to take a chance either just in case a crank found us and we became their lunch. So I kept it in my pocket for dire need. Little did I know that would come in handy soon enough.

It was a few hours past midnight when they attacked. Cranks. There were so many. I remember feeling more scared than I was when my parents set me and my brother up alone before they turned crazy. And I was petrified then. They attacked almost all at once and at first they went for Andy. He shoved me out of our little cave and tossed me a backpack before screaming at me to run. I hesitated.

He screamed more and more when I still didn't listen. He was the last that I had, I couldn't leave him. But then I saw a Crank dig his teeth into Andy's neck and I couldn't watch anymore. I bolted.

They ran after me, but I somehow got away. I don't remember were I was or how I even got to safety. But when I did, I broke down. I screamed, I didn't know what to do. I fell asleep crying unfortunately, and woke up to a huge headache.

My mission that morning: find Andy.

I tried to retrace my steps but it was harder than I thought. It took all day to find where Andy and I last were. When I did find him, he was wheezing and bleeding and he was a bunch of different shades of colours. I sat beside him and he looked at me with such pain in his eyes.

"I...I don't know what to do Andy....how do I help you?" I asked quietly, unable to speak any louder.

Andy shook his head slightly and closed his eyes. His hand moved to my waistband where the gun sat. Hot tears fell from my eyes and down my cheeks. I couldn't do it myself and I knew I couldn't let him suffer anymore or turn into one of them. So I handed him the gun and walked away.

It wasn't until I was a while away before I heard that gun go off. And that was it for me. Like a psychotic break, I changed, my heart grew cold, my body grew numb. I grew ruthless. I vowed to kill every crank I saw until one of them killed me. I wasn't going to let Andy die in vain.

I was fourteen then. Only a child in what would have been our time before the scorch. But when I met the boys of the maze, it had been three whole, long years. Seventeen, and harder than any person I've ever known, a certain Asian boy changed my heart.
