Hazel's point of view:

I feel lifeless; even though I'm not the one who's dying. I'm sitting in a hard plastic chair next to her bed, wishing and praying that my best friend will wake up okay

The only sounds in the room are the sound the hissing of her ventilator and the rhythmic beeping of her heart monitor. Not to mention mine and Rose's muffled sobs. "Hey, remember that time we ate the gummy worm dipped in nacho cheese in sixth grade?" Rose wondered through her tears.

"Dear Lord," I shuddered. "My skin still crawls when I think about that. Y'all be nasty." My voice was full of my sass, which didn't happen all that often.

"It's still a good memory, Hazel." Rose commented. "I never said it wasn't." I smiled halfheartedly.

"I don't remember a time we laughed nearly that hard." I reminisced."What are you thinking about?" Rose snapped me from my thoughts.

"It's just... we take these things for granted," I say, hoping a pair of chocolate eyes will flash up to meet my green ones, "like friendship, and the people we love, you know?" I could feel the tears pooling in my eyes.

"Ugh!" I groaned, "I just want her back, Rose." I turned to meet her. "What if... she doesn't come b-back?" My voice cracked on the last word.

"Hey," Rose started quietly, I knew she was holding back tears. "We will always be a triangle. No matter what happens. Remember in sixth grade when you made it up and convinced Emma and I to say that?"

I nodded slowly. "What about it?" "We were kind of cautious with it at first. I think we realized that's a good thing for us to be called because we are inseparable. Without each other, we'd make a line. It's always been us three," I felt her hand on my shoulder, "and it always will be."

I heard footsteps and a muffled scream coming from the hallway. I jumped at the noise and Rose and I raced to the doorway."What the h-" Rose's tone was angry and condescending. "Mrs. Gomez..." I started. "I thought she knew?" I whispered to Rose. "This must be the first time she's been back here." Rose frowned.

Mrs. Gomez held Emma's hand, crying into the light blue blankets laid on the bed. "I wish it was me..." I mumbled, shaking my head.

"Hazel ! Don't say that!" Rose punched my shoulder."Ow!" I hissed. "What was that for?" "For being an idiot. This shouldn't have happened to any of us. So shut up. Don't ever say that again."

"Ro, I'm sorry." I pulled the curly haired girl into a hug.

"You know I want everything to go back to normal."

"And... if it doesn't?" The taller girl sobbed against my shoulder.

"Then we'll be a triangle. Forever and always."
