Chapter 1: A Normal Life
Location: New York City, NY
Haylee's POV
"Haylee Madeline Evans! Come down here right now!" I hear my mom shouting.
I groan and roll out of bed. I glance at the clock. 8:30 AM. What? "Mom," I shout back. "It's only 8:30. In the morning!" I emphasize. I usually get up at 12:00 at the earliest. I mean, a girl's gotta enjoy her summer, right?
"Haylee, summer's over tomorrow. You at least have to start getting used to the normal schedule."
"Whatever," I mumble. I cover myself with my blankets and fall back asleep again.
"Hayleeeeee!" my mom shouts. "We need to get your school supplies today! And didn't you want to go shopping? Today's a busy day! Chop, chop!"
I groan. "Ok, coming!" I respond. I get up and go to the bathroom. Then I change. After that, I brush my long, brunette (darkish-brown) straight hair. My blue eyes are bright. I don't ever put on makeup. First off, because everyone tells me I don't need it, and secondly, my mom thinks that makeup makes me look like a sex toy. Which I totally don't get, but then again, my mom's super protective. I can't wear shorts that are too short, or a shirt that shows off anything. She won't let me date till I'm in college, because she says something along the lines of "boys are not to be trusted." I can't even be friends with boys! She checks all my texts because she makes us share an account so that she can read all my texts (so deleting texts on my phone doesn't help at all.) Sometimes I wish I knew why she was so protective, but I think it might have something to do with my dad. She raised me as a single mom and never told me a single thing about my dad. Whatever.
I pull my hair into a high ponytail and head downstairs.
"Mornin', Haylee," my mom says.
I grunt in response.
"C'mon, Haylee, don't be that way," my mom laughs. "You're almost a sophomore in high school! Can you believe it? I sure can't. My baby has grown up." I look almost like a twin of my mom. Her hair is a lot darker though. I smile but don't say anything.
"Ok, Haylee," my mom continues. "So first we're going to go get your school supplies." I groan. It's not that I hate school. It's just I hate leaving summer and then going into school. "Don't be that way. Then we're going to go sneaker-shopping." I squeal. I love running, and I must say, I'm pretty good at it. My coach says I may be captain this year. That would be amazing. And also, when I run, there's nothing holding me back. I'm free. "Then, we're going to shop for clothes." I shrug. Clothes don't matter too much to me.
"Let's rock and roll, baby."
Location: Orlando, Florida
Miles' POV
"Do we really have to move?" I ask one last time. I know it's no use. Everything's already packed and my parents have already rented an apartment in NYC. I know I should be excited, because it's NYC(!) but I don't want to leave my friends and the place where I grew up. I also don't want to lose touch with my birth mother. I've never spoken to her, and she chose to not let me know her name, but I feel like this town is the only thing that connects me with her.
"Yes, Miles," my adoptive mother says. She's the best. She and my dad are amazing. I love them to death, but when they told me we were moving, I didn't speak to them for forever. I was so mad. My dad's job transferred him.
I groan and look around once more. I grab my phone and text my best friend, Henry. "Meet me."
He responds immediately. "Normal location?"
I smile. "You bet," I text back. "Text the crew."
"I'm going to say goodbye to Henry and my other friends!" I tell my parents.
"Ok, but don't be too long!" my dad says. "You have to be back in an hour. We're leaving at 11:30." I glance at my watch. It's 10:00.
"Ok," I say as I rush out the door. Time is precious. No time to waste.
I run all the way to our "normal location," an abandoned alley. Henry's leaning against the wall. "Hey, bro," he says gruffly. He's trying not to show emotion but I know he's going to miss me as much as I'll miss him. We've been best friends since preschool, because he picked his nose, and I told on him. He told me immediately he hated me, and then later I picked my nose and he told on me, and we just became best of friends. We play-hated each other.
"Listen," Henry begins. I face him. His face is serious. "I'm going to miss you, okay? Godamn it Miles, I'm going to miss you. You're my best friend. I may hate you, but I still love you."
I can't help but laugh. "That was probably the sweetest thing you've ever said to me, Henry. I'lll miss you too."
At this time, all our other friends show up. I frown when I see my friend Tom with a girl I've never seen before. "Dudes, this is Veronica," Tom says at this exact moment. "She's my girlfriend." I roll my eyes. I've never dated anyone before because I've never found the right girl, where on the other hand, Tom has dated at least 10.
For the next hour, we fool around and play pranks on each other while we all pretend that it's going to be okay, that we're going to stay like this forever. Veronica and Tom don't participate. They've been making out for practically the whole time. Tom's hands have already been on her chest, squeezing, under her shirt, and I do believe once in her pants. Not that I've been watching. I'm too busy having fun and making the most of my time left. I do notice Veronica eyeing me at some points. I brush it off, since I'm used to it. I'm kind of like Percy Jackson. Green, green eyes, and super dark brown hair that's messy.
Then I glance at my watch. 11:13. Where did all that time fly to? "Guys," I say sadly, "We're leaving in 17 minutes." At once everyone crowds around me. All the guys start punching me playfully. We don't hug. I say goodbye to everyone and promise we'll stay in touch and I'll visit. The last one I talk to is Henry.
"Don't pick your nose again in front of someone," I laugh.
"Bro, you suck," Henry snaps. "Don't be a tattletale."
"Hey, look who's talking!" I retort. We punch each other. Henry breaks it up.
"Dude, you gotta go." I do. Bidding them all a farewell, I turn and run out of my alley full of memories. I don't look back.
