Chapter 2: Haylee and Miles meet
Location: Glenheights High of the Sciences, Main Entrance
Haylee's POV
I enter my school, Glenheights High of the Sciences. I love this school. I have a bunch of awesome (girl) friends and science is my favorite subject so it's a perfect fit for me. I take a look around. I'll be moving to the sophomore corridor this year. Suddenly, I see a familiar face.
"Haylee!" Lily shouts. I make my way through the crowd to her. "What's up, gal?" she asks me. "I swear, you got a few inches taller. Either that or I got shorter." I laugh. I did get taller. I'm 5' 7 now. Lily's only 5' flat, so she's always envious of my height. I have super long legs.
"Lils," I say. "I haven't seen you in forever!"
"I know!" Lily links her arm with mine. "I just got back from camp a few days ago, and I've been so exhausted. I would've found the time for a get-together, but I seriously needed the rest. I practically died this morning when my alarm went off. I hit snooze for 5 times before my mom came in and shouted in my ear."
"It's fine," I say. "I've missed you a lot though. What's new?"
"Oh, my gosh," Lily exclaims, tapping a manicured finger on my arm. "Did I tell you the most exciting news ever?" I look at her and shake my head no. "I have the hottest boyfriend," she whispers. "His name is Josh and, oh my god I literally fainted when he took his shirt off at the campfire and told me to lean against him." Lily's super dramatic. I love her, but sometimes her hyperness gets on my nerves.
I look at her, interested. "Oh?" I ask. "Didn't you have a boyfriend before?" Lily's dated a lot. My mom thinks she's a bad influence but I don't really care.
"Pfft, yeah," Lily says, waving me off. "But Joshy is so sweet. I'm not even a virgin anymore!"
I gasp. "What the hell, Lily?"
"What, Haylee?" Lily asks, sounding a little annoyed. "It's no biggie."
"But it is!" I say. "Seriously. Lily, I just don't want you to get hurt. Did he wear a condom? Was he gentle? Are you okay?" I ask in a hushed whisper.
Lily shrugs. "Yeah, he wore a condom, he was gentle, and I'm fine. It hurt so bad, though." Am I imagining it, or does she look regretful? "Anyway, yeah, that my summer," she says abruptly, changing the subject. "How was yours?"
"It was good, but–"
Lily cuts me off. "Oh my gosh, do you see that guy?" she asks, gesturing to the other end of the hallway.
"I see lots of guys," I say, squinting.
"No, the super hot one. Messy dark brown hair, green eyes? Opening a locker? I think he's the new guy. He's in our corridor, right? There's only one new guy this year. OMG, that has to be him. He's drop-dead gorgeous, don't you think?" I see who she's pointing to, and yeah, he's definitely cute. Not super hot though.
"Don't you have a boyfriend?" I ask.
"Haylee, you are absolutely no fun," Lily whines. "But c'mon, let's go check out where our lockers are. Hopefully they're near his." She drags me through the crowd.

Miles' POV
I scan the crowd, looking for a friendly face I can ask for directions. I finish up at my locker and close it. I see 2 girls coming my way. One is shorter with short blonde hair and the other is way taller, and has long, brunette hair that's braided in a French braid. The blonde is staring at me, and the brunette is trying to talk to a different girl, but the blonde keeps dragging her over. My heart rate accelerates. The blonde is hot, for sure, and I'm trying to get a look at the brunette. But I don't really care about dating right now. I just need directions. The 2 girls finally make it over.
"Hey!" the blonde says in a high-pitched voice. "You're the new kid, right?"
"Yes, that's me," I say. "Am I the only new one?"
"Yep!" the blonde giggled. "I'm Lily."
"Miles," I respond politely. The brunette doesn't introduce herself. I realize then that she's super, super pretty. But I will myself not to stare at her in order not to creep her out. I can't help but give her a once-over, though. She's wearing a neon pink T-shirt that has a huge heart on it, and white shorts. Her legs are tan, toned, lean, and long.
Lily clears her throat. She looks at me, then leans in. Her shirt is loose, so she's showing me an awful lot of cleavage. I have a feeling it's on purpose. "You know, you're super hot," she whispers. She catches me looking at her shirt and giggles. "That's just a small sampling of my hotness." She runs her hand down my arm, then gestures towards her jeans. "I have more to show you, and I'm sure you do too." She giggles again, then stands up straight. I stare at her.
"Lily, you're creeping him out," the brunette finally speaks. Her voice is lower, and absolutely perfect.
Lily shrugs unapologetically. "That's just because you're no fun, H," she says. H? What does H stand for? "Guys would love you so much more if you were daring, I mean, look at your clothes! It covers everything." H rolls her eyes at her, and then at me. I give her a small smile. She doesn't return it. What's up with this girl?

Haylee's POV
This new boy is such a flirt. First of all, of course I noticed him giving me a once-over, and now he's just grinning at me in a flirtatious way. God, stop. I hate those kinds of boys. They think they're so perfect. But girls like Lily love them. Lily's already showed him her cleavage and he wasn't decent enough to not look. So much for my hope that the new boy wouldn't be a jerk like all the other boys in my grade.
I speak up. "Lily, I'm going to head to class." She doesn't hear me. She's busy chatting and flirting with the new boy. Miles, or whatever his name is. Miles looks up, though. He looks nervous. "Would you please tell Lily that I'm heading to class right now?" I tell him.
Lily's head snaps up. "What the hell, H?" she asks. "Why didn't you just tell me? I can speak, you know."
"I did just tell you," I respond. "But you weren't listening because you were too busy flirting with Miles. And you have a boyfriend already!"
"Sounds like someone's jealous," Lily retorts. "You're so jealous you can't even deal with the fact that boys like me and don't like you. You're so afraid of everything, aren't you? I can't believe I'm even friends with you." My eyes sting.
"I'm not jealous," I blurt out. "And I can't believe you would say something like that to me. I've always supported you and your boyfriends, even when you choose them over me." Tears well up in my eyes and I turn and walk away fast before she can see them.
