Prologue - The Birth of Haylee and Miles
Location: Hospital room #419
Audrey, a new mother, looks down at her twins' faces for the first time. She starts crying.
Her nurse, mistaking her tears as happy ones, chimes in happily, "Aren't they beautiful?"
Audrey looks up with sadness in her eyes. "Take them!" she shouted. "I hate him, I hate him, I hate him..." she thrusts the babies at the nurse.
The nurse, startled, takes the babies. Gently, she says, "They're beautiful, Audrey. A baby boy and a baby girl. What are you going to name them?"
Audrey does not respond. She's muttering to herself, "I hate him, I hate him, I hate him" over and over again.
The nurse retreats silently with the babies and soon comes back with a clipboard. "Ooh, Haylee and Miles!" she says. "That's super pretty. Audrey, are you okay?"
"I hate their father so, so much. The burden's just too big," Audrey finally says after a long silence. "He told me he loved me, wanted to start a family with me. And now I've brought his daughter and son into this world, and he's left me. And this whole year, I've been tending to my broken heart, and now this? Baby Miles, I can tell already, looks exactly like his father. And Haylee's beautiful. I can't do this. I can't raise the boy."
"Well, consider it," the nurse says softly. "Miles' looks may be like his father, but his personality will be completely different."
"Whatever," Audrey responds.

Audrey finishes the forms and hands baby Miles over to the lady at the adoption center. Without even a look back, she flees. Her eyes well with tears. She can't do it. She needs to go back and get Miles. What was she thinking? What if nobody adopts him? What if he lives his life in the adoption center and then does turn out to be like his father? Abusive, full of hatred? But then she looks down at baby Haylee, who's nestling peacefully in her arms. It's not fair to Haylee. Haylee deserves to lead a sheltered, normal life. Audrey knows just the looks of Miles will put her in a bad mood all the time. She tells herself, "One month." In just one month, if nobody adopts Miles, she will come back and take him back. With that, she smiles.
1 month later
"Miles has been adopted," the adoption lady informs Audrey. Audrey stares. "Would you like the family's information?" Audrey nods her head, speechless. She had no idea someone would actually adopt Miles. Oh, god. No. She won't let Haylee know. She won't let Haylee know she had a twin. Or an abusive father. It's for her own good. The lady hands Audrey a sheet of paper which says:
MILES (Original last name, Evans) Spezzaferri
DOB (Date of birth): January 21, 2015
Biological mother: Audrey Evans
Biological father: Andrew Sheppard
Adoptive mother: Sophia Spezzaferri
Adoptive father: Jeffrey Spezzaerri
Note: The only information supplied to the adoptive parents were Miles' DOB and weight. Other information was asked to be kept private by AUDREY EVANS, including Miles' biological parents.
Swallowing hard, Audrey rushes out of the adoption center. Her mouth keeps forming the word, "No." She bites her lip and then makes a decision. She and Haylee will move. Yes. They'll move to New York City – her relatives are there. There are great schools. She will never be in touch with Miles again. She hadn't even put down that Miles had a twin. Done.
