I push through the crowds that flank the city square. As usual. Today is the Midsummer Festival
Where is he?
He's training to be a city official so where is he?
I eye the ring of officials sitting above me with their trainees.
Looking for Ronan.
And for him.
Caius.
I silently curse Stern,my Warwings instructor, for releasing us late.
I run my hand over the soft black fur that covers my body nervously. His bronze skin, bare of the fur that covers the Foryx's skin, should be easy to spot.
Then I see him. Sitting up straight, making notes. Making notes, for goodness sake. Look up!
He does, and laughs when he spots me waving vigorously.
"I'll be released as soon as possible. "He says in my head with our telepathy.
I nod to tell him I heard, then melt into the shadows.
As one of the Foryx,I ,like everyone else, was born with powers. The first power we receive is called a Legacy, and is the power we will most likely use most. Mine was darkness and death. Typical. But there was a plus side. I can shadow jump to wherever I want. A bit like teleportation. The Warwings use me as a spy to hide in the shadows and hear their secrets.
Shadow jumping was darkness, strange noises, cold shivers up your spine and going so fast you'd think your face was peeling off. But after years of doing it,I was used to it.
I shadow jump to Montonya's, me and caius' Favourite cafe.
I order an éclair and sit and our Favourite spot by the window to wait.
My éclair arrives. I take a bite and subconsciously look up. There he is. Smiling like he doesn't have a care in the world. I immediately stand up and run into his open arms.
"It's been too long,"I whisper in his ear.
