Prologue

Rayne paced back and forth, pondering over various subjects. Her long brown hair trailed down her back and her bright green eyes were clouded with thought.

Her school clothes hung off her body, well fitting but not too revealing. Her shoes tapped against the tiles as she paced.

"Rayne, will you calm down a little?" The girl to the side of her peered up from her book, her glasses slipping down her nose. She resembled a doll of sorts, beautiful yet small.

Rayne let out a troubled sigh and shook her head, "I can't, Kady, I'm so nervous!" The girl named Kady closed her book and threw it to the side. She stood up, her uniform crinkled and old looking. She placed her hands firmly on her hips and let out a sigh.

"Look, Rayne, you don't have to be nervous about this, it's just a dorm-shift." Kady was right, it was just a dorm shift. However not a normal dorm shift. Dorm shifts happened once every year for the poorer students, which Rayne was.

She bit her lip and gave her friend an angry expression, "But a Shift to a boys dorm is practically unheard of, Kady!" The dorms were usually seperated. Girls dorms were on the southern end of the campus, boys dorms were at the northern end.

"You'll be fine, Rayne. Plus its only for a year." Kady's long black hair was tied up into two buns hanging like pigtails. Her fringe hung over her eyebrows as she tried to be concerned in the slightest. However Kady was known for being horridly honest and not caring.

"One whole year, Kady!" Rayne yelled, the frustration rising in her voice.

"One whole year, Rayne. You'll be fine."

One could only hope.

Rayne carried her bags behind her, dread in her eyes and her skin pale. She'd never been to the boys dorms so she didn't know what they were like. Though most of the dorms around campus looked like big houses, she was still scared.

Within no time she was at the door. It looked almost identical to her old dorm, the one all her friends were still in.

Hesitantly, she lifted her hand up, putting it into a fist, and knocked ever so gently on the door. The wood was cold and hard, but had the lingering smell of paint.

"Comiiiingggg!" A voice called. Rayne stood awkwardly, her skirt waving gently in the afternoon wind. The door opened, revealing a boy, surprise surprise. He was tall, much more so than her. His messy black hair stood out against his blue eyes and pale skin. He stood for a moment in thought.

"Who are you...?" He finally asked, pointing a finger at Rayne.

She frowned and looked down at her feet, "I got shifted here... There aren't any rooms left in the girl dorms..." She explained sadly, "I have to stay here." The boy stared at her for another moment before stepping out of the way so she could drag her bags in.

Inside it was much the same as her old dorm, except a light blue instead of a light red. The funiture was the same places, everything, it all looked the same.

"My names Alan, I know, lame, but you can call me Ally, everybody else does." The boy stood proudly before her as she examined the ground level. He still had his uniform on, a pale white shirt, black pants and a black school jumper.

"Where's my room...?" Rayne asked dryly, looking back to the boy. He put on a wounded expression and crossed his arms.

"First floor, room 3." He replied, matching the utter dryness, "Gosh, what got your nickers in a twist, girly." The question was more of a statement than a question. But regardless he moved forward to grab one of Rayne's bags and help her up the stairs.

There was little to no conversation as they walked, until they got to the room, "Only 5 of us live here, just so you know. You make 6." Rayne piled into the room and dumped her bags on the floor, "There's me, Alan, I'm a first year senior level, then theres--" Rayne stopped listening as he rambled on about her dorm-mates.

However, the list was as follows:

 - Alan Sherman > 1st year > Senior Level > First floor room 5

 - Drake Jones > 3rd year > Senior Level > First floor room 9

 - Kaleb Smith > 2nd year > Middle Level > First floor room 1

 - Evan Miles > 3nd year > Senior Level > First floor room 2

 - Xander Williams > 3rd year > Middle Level > First floor room 4

 - Rayne Meyers > 2nd year > Senior Level > First floor room 3

After some time Rayne shooed the first year out of her room so she could unpack. When she was done she awkwardly shuffled out of the room and down stairs again. Alan was laying on his stomach on the floor, eating a pudding cup and reading a book.

There was another boy in the room, too. He was tall and scary looking. He wore a long coat over his uniform and his brown hair was a mess. He scribbled down things into a school book.

"Ally, whose the girly?" The boy asked. His voice was quiet but otherwise very calming.

Alan looked up to see Rayne standing in the room awkwardly, not sure what to do or say, "Oh, that's Rayne, or something. She's living here now." He explained simply, turning back to his very thick book.

"Hello..." Rayne murmured awkwardly, fiddling with her white shirt, "It's nice to meet you..."

Alan kicked his feet childishly as he ate his chocolate pudding, "Rayne, this is Evan, he's a third year senior level, kind of scary, macho man if you will. He's a nice guy sometimes." Rayne nodded her head and wandered to the large table in the middle of the room. She took a seat across from the scary looking boy and twiddled her fingers.

She cleared her throat suddenly, "Where is everybody? Schools been over for a while, right...?" Alan got up suddenly, throwing his pudding container into the bin. He strolled over and took a seat at the table, shoving his book onto it. Alan was starting to remind Rayne of her friend Kady, except much more happy-go-lucky.

"Work, I think. Drake, Kaleb and Xander all have work today. Evan and I don't work because of studies, so we're always here." He passed a happy smile to his uppclassman, "If you need anything don't hesitate to ask me, kay?"

Evan smirked, scribbling down some more words into his book, "Don't worry 'bout Ally, he's a big wuss who can't do much. The only thing he's good for is a bit of entertainment every now and then. Just last year he climbed up a tree and broke his arm all for my entertainment... Ah, good times..." Evan sat in thought for a moment before he went back to his work.

Alan mused quietly, "Shut up, meat-head..." He murmured.

"Oh yeah, tomorrow you might have to introduce yourself to everybody, so try not to be to cold towards them." Alan fiddled with his book quietly. Rayne looked up at him, looking at the small smile on his face, "They get offended easily." he winked then.

Rayne nodded her head and tried her best to smile without feeling to dumb, "Thanks..."

"Enjoy your stay while you can, girly." Evan sighed into his book, face pressed against the pages, "Before you know it, it'll be over."

Rayne was wishing it was over already, actually...
