Lily ran into the great hall the next morning for breakfast clutching all her books for the day in one hand, her wand, a galleon, sickle and knut in the other.
She threw herself into a seat and slammed her books on the table.
Breathing heavy she waved her wand muttering an incantation, causing a small envelope to appear on the table in front of her.
Lily reached into her bag and pulled out a piece of parchment and a quill. Her eyes widened as she realised she had forgotten her ink.
Lily squeezed her eyes shut trying to remember what the charm was for a bottle of ink was, her hand hanging limp inside her bag.
A sudden bag shook the table causing her to shriek and fall backwards off the seat.
"HELP ME!" Cried a voice, Lily pulled herself back on the seat and glared across the table at the offender.
"Mr Potter. That is not, appropriate behavior." said a stern voice from behind Lily, she turned and saw McGonagall glowering at James over her spectacles.
"Sorry Professor." groaned James. "Five points from Gryffindor." Sirius punched James in the arm. "Ow!" he cried.
McGonagall turn her back and walked away shaking her head.
"Do you have no control over these idiots?" Lily asked Remus. "No, none at all." he replied reaching to grab an apple from the bowl in the centre of the table.
"I'm going to FAIL history of magic." moaned James. "Shut up Potter, we don't want to hear it." snapped Lily, turning to face him.
It took lily a moment to realise he was trying to write his essay for History of Magic that was due this morning.
His ink bottle was sitting next to his arm.
She reached across the table and snatched it up. "Evans! You're doing it for me? Yes. Now I can re- "
"Not so fast Potter." she snapped at him. "I need an ink bottle. I'm writing to home, it's Petunia's birthday."
"Why are you taking mine?" complained James.
"You had yours out, you weren't using it and we're in the same house so you have to share."
"What?!"
"Actually she's...right...ugh. It's an unspoken rule Prongs." sighed Sirius. Lily dipped her quill in the ink and began quickly writing a letter to her family.
Dear Tuney, Mummy and Daddy,
I am writing to wish a very, very happy birthday to Tuney. I hope you have a wonderful day. I am very sorry I couldn't be there with you.
I enclosed you present inside. I hope you find them as fascinating as I do. I am sorry I don't have anything else for you. We haven't done our first Hogsmeade trip yet. When we do I'll send you something better.
I am enjoying classes and I hope all is well at home.
Lots of Love,
Lily
Lily folded up the note and placed it inside the envelope with the galleon, sickle and knut.
She sealed the envelope and wrote her family's names on the front.
She tucked the envelope inside her robes and slid the inkwell across to James who had, along with Sirius stuck their quills in their hair and were imitating tribal indian men.
Peter was laughing and Remus was trying to ignore them by talking to another fellow Gryffindor, Frank Longbottom.
Lily stood and collected her things and began to walked out of the hall to the owlery to deliver her letter.
