"What?! You're going to get engaged?!" Amelia eyes went wide opened, her jaw dropped.
"Shh! Keep it down! I don't want anyone to know about this."
"Who's getting engaged?" Deo who was standing behind me.
"It's me."
"What?! To who?!"
And I told them everything.
"Your father is crazy." Deo said flatly.
"He is not."
"I mean your old man is trying to marry you off to someone you don't even know!"
"Isn't he being too selfish?"
"This is father's decision so I cannot go against it and I'm indebted to him after all these years."

Deo was ignoring me for the past week. He must have been angry at me for getting engaged out of a sudden.
"What's his problem anyway? He isn't the one getting engaged." I pouted at Amelia.
"I think Deo likes you and he is just being jealous. But are you sure about marrying someone you've just met and don't even love?" Amelia told me. She was right. I was marrying someone blindly without really knowing the person. So, I was going to find out more about Roy and maybe I'll love him eventually.

My father was going to hold a welcome party for Roy at home. He said I could bring some friends along.
"You seemed kind of happy today. Did something happen?" I asked Amelia who was brimming all day long.
"It's my childhood friend. He's moved back to stay here again. I haven't seen him for ages and he has grown into handsome young man."
"Wasn't he your first love?"
"Yes, I still love him even now."
"Wow, that's great. You reunited with your love again."
"We ain't lovers yet. But I'm gonna make him mine soon." Amelia giggled.

I called for Deo when I saw him coming out of class.
He heard but ignored me and continued walking the other direction. In a few months, we were going to graduate and leave this school. If I don't settle this now, I was never going to see him again. I seriously don't to lose a best friend or him so I ran after him.

"Are you going to continue avoiding me?" I pulled his hand.
"Let go, Elysa. We have nothing to talk about."
"Yes we do. Why are you mad at me?"
"I'm mad because you never intend to tell me about your engagement."
"I was going to."
"There has got to be someone you really love. It doesn't have to be him."
I had loved Deo a long time ago when he first stepped into this school and talked to me. I remember the day when our eyes met. But he was out of my reach and I wasn't worthy of him. Who would marry someone adopted? We were bestfriends and not lovers. I wanted to say it out loud but my words got choked.
"I like you, Elysa." Deo admitted.
"What?" I was surprised, this wasn't like what I expected.
"I have liked you for a long time."
"It's impossible. I've a fiance already."
Deo had confessed to me and I rejected him. I can't go against my father's words.

Amelia had arrived early. During the party, Amelia had dissappeared after father introduced Roy to everyone.

Amelia

I was shocked when I found out Roy was engaged to Elysa. I suddenly felt sick so I went to the washroom. On my way to the washroom, I overheard Elysa's father conversation with his wife.
"Roy would be a perfect partner for Elysa. When he marries Elysa and produce a blood-related grandson who would be our heir to all my assets."

"Honey, but Elysa is our daughter and you know we loved her so much. You should let the girl decide her own happpiness."

"She is merely a tool that we raised. It's your fault that we couldn't have any children."

Her father stomped out of the room angrily and left his wife crying in the room. He was such a selfish man.

How could her father used her like that? I have to tell Elysa about this. However, this might ruin the perfect image of her father. Elysa loved her foster parents every much and was grateful for all the things that they have done for her. I really cannot imagine the pain she will have to suffer after finding out the truth.

I quickly hurried out but accidentally ran into Roy.
"Amelia? What are you doing here?"
"I'm Elysa's bestfriend. Is it true that you were going to marry Elysa?"
"That's right."
"Do you love her?"
"No."
"Then why?"
"My uncle has a huge inheritance which would make me extremely weathly and famous. Because of my parents' business failed so we came back to restart."
"You don't need to do this, Roy."
"I have to."

"What happened to the boy I used to know?"

"People changed. You can't expect me to be the same as before. I know you since we were kids so I won't let you get in my way even if we were childhood friends." Roy walked away and left me standing in the middle of a silent hallway. The words hurt like knives. I couldn't bear to let the one I loved to stupid things to satisfy his greed. I had to think of a way to stop him.
