"I can't believe that fucking worked. How do they expect to keep terrorists out of the village, if they just allow anyone that looks only slightly menacing to just come waltzing in here?" I mused.
Zabuza chuckled next to me, his arm circled around my waist.
"You're lucky you happened to know how to change the color of your hair; I was going to make you wear an obnoxious wig."
I shot him a look.
"You're lucky I even let you convince me to pull this stupid stunt."
It feels like it's been more than just a few months since I've been here, since I called this place my home. The streets littered with common day people, families going about there day.
He kissed the top of my now red haired head, having taken off his mask as to not be recognized.
"You have to admit though; you got a thrill when I introduced you as my new bride." He chuckled.
I looked away, not allowing him to see the proof of his words as pink splattered my cheeks.
His disguise was only half convincing, a long sleeved green tunic, matching pants and a raised collar so it'd be harder to see his shark teeth littered smile.
The dress I'm wearing was bought just for the occasion, a birthday gift Zabuza had spotted on our trip here. Short sleeved dark blue tunic dress, slit from the thighs down on each side. When he picked it out, I couldn't help but compare it to the outfit Sakura would wear.
"It doesn't help that you had me wear this flower crown to cover my horns; I definitely look the part of a new bride." I sniffed.
He smirked under his collar.
"It fits you."
He'd think that even if I were wearing a potato sack...
~He's love sick. It only proves to make me sick~ Lucille chimed in, sounding more amused than annoyed.
He squeezed my hip as we casually strolled down the dirt road.
"So, you obviously know this place better than I do. Where would you like to have dinner?"
A ping of nostalgia hit me and I couldn't help the smile that suddenly overtook me.
"Ramen? Lucy, sweetie; it's your birthday. I can afford something much nicer than just ramen noodles. I even saw a nice little place down-"
I cut him off with a pout I know he can't resist.
I spun on my heel so I could face him, the lights from the familiar Ramen bar illuminating his handsome face.
"This place meant a lot to me when I lived here. Please, dear husband?" I teased, wrapping my arms sensually around his neck.
His eyes widened, those beautiful grey eyes I admit I've fallen weak in the knees for. It wasn't hard to fall for the man, even after he confessed his past to me. How he had murdered hundreds of kids when he was just a child, in a mandatory competition in order to compete for a position in the Seven Ninja Swordsman of the Mist.
I have no room to judge him; there is always a reason behind horrible tragedies. Just like in my case; I was too young to know better. I just wanted to be rid of the pain and alienation I knew my whole life.
He wrapped his arms around my waist holding me against his body.
"Whatever you wish, loving wife of mine." He said softly.
Warmth flushed over me as I pecked him quickly on the lips, spinning out of his embrace to take a seat at the bar. Though I've met the man behind the counter countless times, he didn't show any sign of recognizing me.
After we ordered, I relished in the warmth of the green tea between my hands.
"So, how is it you know a specific jutsu in order to change something as mundane as your hair color?" He spoke up, casually sipping at his tea.
I shrugged, fondly smiling at the memory.
"It was because of this girl I really hated at school. When I met her, I noticed right away that we had the same hair color and wanted nothing in common with her. So, I asked my Papa to teach me a way to change my hair color." My voice is soft, the memory caressing my nostalgia.
I remember Sasuke's surprise when I came to school the next morning, sporting matching raven black hair. If I couldn't be his real sister, I thought I may as well look like it instead of someone as annoying as Sakura.
"It didn't last long though. A friend of mine taught me just how stupid my decision was; it didn't matter what I looked like, the only thing that mattered was who I was. To him I was more than my hair color."
Zabuza listened attentively, resting his chin in his hand as he stared at me.
As soon as our food was served, did I realize just how damn hungry I am.
"Iruka-sensei, I said I'm fine!"
Chopsticks mid-air; I froze.
"Naruto, you can't just lock yourself in your house forever! Come on, it's on me."
"I've been going to training every day, I'm fine!" He growled.
The voices grew closer as the hairs on my arms stood on end.
"You've hardly gone out since you got back from the Hidden Mist! All I'm asking is one meal, just you and I."
Zabuza slowly reached out to grab my hand, just as I noticed how badly they were trembling. Why didn't I think he'd come here? He's the reason I even started eating here, years ago. Fear gripped my heart, as I merely avoided hyperventilating.
"Dear... shall we begin to head back?" he asked cautiously.
I didn't need to look over as a blur of orange and blonde entered the corner of my eye. He sat at the opposite end of the bar, Iruka taking the seat next to him.
Naruto...
"Yes..." my voice was just above a whisper, afraid he'd recognize me.
Zabuza left money on the counter, as we stood to leave our food hardly touched. He grabbed my hand, intertwining his large fingers with mine as we walked in Naruto's direction to head back.
To be this close to him... after all this time...
Just when we were about to be in the clear; I was suddenly turned around, a hand twisting me by my shoulder.
I gasped softly, an anvil dropping into the pit of my stomach, his blue eyes just inches from mine.
"Luc- Oh! Uh... I'm sorry, Miss. I guess I'm seeing her everywhere now. I thought you were someone I knew. Sorry about grabbing you like that." He awkwardly blushed, scratching the back of his head and smiling apologetically.
My boy... my brother...
He misses me, he really does.
"No, it's quite alright. I hope you find whoever it is you're looking for. Have a good evening." I don't know how I managed to keep my voice so steady, but when I smiled at him and he smiled back; I almost fell to my knees.
Zabuza gently pulled me away.
"Come, my love. Let's leave the young man to enjoy his dinner." He wrapped his arm around my waist, steering me ahead.
I let him, not looking back, but keeping my head down.
Enjoy his dinner... and the rest of his life... knowing his friend betrayed him and left him to once again, be alone.
