I awoke to my dad honking the horn.
"Come on! Are you kidding me!" He screamed at the top of his lungs. I rubbed the sleep from my eyes, peering out the window at the groups of people on the vacant highway. The only thing in our way we're the dozens of cars filling the highway leading out of a large city. I looked over at Ryleigh, her pure jade green eyes glistening in the sunlight, barely peeking over the horizon. I took the mute headphones off my head, leaning forward into the front seats.
Guess my playlist ended.
"Hey, what's going on?" I asked, putting my hand on my dads shoulder.
"The road is entirely filled up, no one on the street is moving." My dad said angrily.
"I'll go check it out." I said, unbuckling, opening the side door and hopping out shutting it behind me. I walked over to a group of people on the bed of a truck. They were a bit scrubby, looking as if they didn't have any money, their clothes were torn, they looked dirty.
"Hey, do you know what's going on?" I asked, standing awkwardly in front of them. One of the men, wearing a dirty brown flannel looked over at another man with a blonde beard. The man in the brown flannel grabbed a metal baseball bat, standing up and swinging it at me.
"Danny, no!" A woman said, clutching a redheads man. I ducked under the bat, punching the man in the stomach.
"What the hell!" I screamed at the man, who had dropped the bat and tucked over. Just then I was hit in the head, knocking me to the ground with a throbbing headache. I looked up at the blonde man who was hitting my body over and over with a wooden bat. My hearing was foggy along with my eyesight but I could hear the woman still screaming. Then a figure grabbed the man by the neck and threw him to the ground. I rubbed my eyes and looked at the figure again, it was a man, he put his hand out, I grabbed it, feeling his ruff skin. It felt familiar to those in the army.
"You okay?" The man asked me. My vision finally readjusted and I was able to picture his face. It was the red headed man.
"I'm fine... Just a little shaken up." I said, holding my head.
"I'm Dustin." The man said, putting out his hand.
"Seth." I said, looking into his blue eyes. He seemed like a trustworthy person. The blonde bearded man groaned on the ground, as he tried to get to his feet. He looked at me with anger in his eyes.
"Do you want to go down again, Dylan?" Dustin said to him.
"Screw you!" Dylan said, standing up and sitting on the truck bed.
"Do you guys know what is going on?" I asked, feeling a warm liquid flowing down my neck. I touched my neck, looking at my hand, blood.
"We just came from Nashville, that place is totally vacant as everyone is trying to get to the ocean. They have ships and stuff to keep us alive." Dustin said.
"They promised us protection from this infection." The woman said, walking up to us.
"This is Nonie. She's my girlfriend." Dustin said, grabbing her hand. She smiled and put out her other hand to shake mine.
"Hi." I said, shaking her hand and smiling back.
"What's your setup like?" Dustin said, looking around.
"We are in that SUV right back there, we have five passengers in our eight passenger vehicle, we are going to Minneapolis where the military has a base being set up. The infection hasn't reached there yet." I explained.
"You guys are assholes..." The man that Nonie called "Danny" with the brown flannel said.
"You were going to kill him, just because there isn't any more authorities that are going to take you to jail doesn't mean that you have to lose your morality." Dustin said, looking into my eyes and rolling his.
