I woke up to the sun shining in my eyes. I looked over at Ryleigh, her head was on my shoulder, she was still sleeping. I looked out of the window at the large city we were coming upon. I checked the clock, 11:30.
"Dad?" I asked, he looked through the mirror, revealing his bloodshot eyes.
"Yeah." He asked irritably.
"We should stop somewhere." I suggested.
"Good plan, let's stop in this town." He said sarcastically. I could tell he hadn't slept, because when he is tired, he is grumpy.
We drove up to a large metal gate, where a makeshift military guard tower had been set up. There was a military man with an M60 on the ground. We drove up to the gate where the man came up to the window. My dad rolled the window down and awaited his questions.
"Welcome to Fort Banks. Do you have any experience in the military?" The man asked. He was African American, with a purple pin on his shirt.
"I do, my son does too." He said.
"May we see your papers?" The man asked.
"I forgot them at the house, we left in a hurry because of this epidemic." My dad explained.
"Okay. What is your name and your sons?" The man asked, pulling out a mini computer from his pocket.
"Scott Blane Peterson, and my son is Seth E Peterson." My dad said. The man typed something on the computer, then looked up at the watch tower, waving his hand. The gate started to open. "Welcome to fort Banks"
"Thanks." My dad said, closing his window and driving in. The town only consisted of military men and their families, they all wore a pin. The town was a brick layered street that led all the way through. It was filled with large buildings, not skyscrapers, but fairly large buildings. It was in the shape of an octagon. Metal walls with military guarding every post. My dad parked the car behind a military jeep.
"We are here?" Dustin asked, sitting up and rubbing his eyes.
"We are here for a night. Don't get too settled in." My dad said, hopping out of the vehicle. Ryleigh sat up, looking around. She looked at me.
"Are we here?" She asked me, her eyes widening in excitement.
"We stein fort banks, we are staying here for the night, then we are leaving. I opened my door, hopping out. A military man walked up to us.
"Welcome to fort banks, will you be staying long?" The man said. He had slicked back blonde hair, a scar on his cheek and was very built. His smile was fairly sly.
"We are staying for a day, then we are going to make our way to Minneapolis." My dad explained, pulling backpacks of stuff out of the back.
"Oh! Well good luck to you!" The man said, looking at me.
"Thanks." I said awkwardly.
"Name is Slade." The man said, putting out his hand. I shook his hand, which he made sure to crush.
"Seth." I said, trying to release my grasp. He held my hand, crushing it with his forceful fist, then released his grasping, leaving me with a numb hand.
"Again, welcome to fort banks." Slade said, walking away. Dustin, Nonie and Tyler got out of my side door.
"I don't like that guy..." I said, turning to Nonie.
"He seems nice, going out of his way to greet us." Nonie said.
"Or suspicious." I said, watching him leave with anticipation.
