Chapter Six - The Membership
School was basically over. I had been out cold for almost four hours. Yet, my dream had only lasted minutes. Sometimes, I wondered where the time went, how did it just pass without us realizing? I decided that this was a topic to add to my ever growing list of things to think about. So far on this list:
1) Understand guy logic (long shot, I know)
2) Wonder about the universe and what (who?) controls it.
Most Recently:
3) Find out about the murder at RHS.
4) Figure out who Tom is.
5) Figure out why Daren choked me.
6) Remember Ocean Eyes' name.
And now...
7) Find out where all the time goes.
So far today, I had added 5. This was a lot, considering my list of two had began a year ago. I hadn't actually looked at the list in a while. Or found it again until today.... Anyway, I digress.
My first day of school had not gone as planned. I had missed all of my classes except for math and my last class that was going to start any minute; however, for some strange reason.... I didn't want to go. Fancy that. I wonder why...?
So, of course, I was acting sarcastic with myself.
I didn't even want to get up. No, the annoyingly squeaky cot was not comfortable, nevertheless, it was better than walking through the halls of school and facing the scared stares of students, some of whom saw my encounter with Daren. Oh, that was another worry. Daren.
What if I ran into him again? I didn't even remember the guy, but I was still scared shitless by him. You know that feeling of walking late at night down the hallway of your house? And you really have to pee, but you're afraid that something's gonna eat you? Or jump out at you? That was this feeling. But since I couldn't even remember the guy's face, it was like knowing the boogey man was there, but you could do nothing about. Taking a chance of faith was my best bet.
"Come on, sweetie, you only have one class left in the day. Do you want to miss this and get behind in this class, too?" Oh, right. Did I mention that it wasn't myself motivating me to go to my next class. I was literally being kicked out of the nurse's office. It was like they didn't even care!
The same grandmotherly nurse was trying to coax me up off the cot. "You'll heal sooner or later. She never relents her powers."
Groggily, I sat up, but paused. Had I just heard her correctly? What the hell was she talking about? "What did you say?"
She looked about as confused as I was. "You... You're not...?" She couldn't seem to even understand herself. This situation was turning sketchy. I had absolutely no idea what was going on and the fact that an adult didn't either, only freaked me out even more.
"I'm what?"
Her eyes went wide, as she must have just realized something. Clearly faking a smile, she said, "Oh, nothing dear. It's time for you to go now or you'll be late."
Standing up, I watched as I saw myself calmly walk out of the nurse's office and into the hallway. What... just happened? I didn't even try to do anything, my mind just sort of made me stand up, made me walk, made me leave. There was none of my say in the matter. Something was fishy, but how else could I have walked here without making myself? I couldn't explain it.
I began walking down the hall. Realizing that I had no idea where I was going, I stopped a teacher along the way and asked for directions to my last class. They stared at my neck for the good part of it, but directed me to where I needed to go nonetheless.
