Letter 04
Dear Jun,
Hello, Jun! How's your life now? You went back to China. But I miss you here in Seoul and in my martial arts class. Gosh, you are my senpai, you know that?
I missed the times where you taught me how to use the stick. I was in the beginner's class while you were in the experts. That was why my teacher requested you to teach me. In fact, the teacher instructed a few of the students from the expert class to teach some of the beginners. And thanks to you, I improved and advanced a level.
"You have potential," you one told me after our classes. "Do you want to learn more?"
I wiped a sweat that trickled down my forehead. The room was humid here so that made everyone sweat. "Learn more? Where else would we learn? It's not like this place would be open 24/7, right?"
You gave me a sly smile and replied, "Meet me outside this building at 9pm, okay? Let's train more. Pretty soon, I'll see you in the expert class as well."
I was really confused by you, Jun. Why would you ask me to come by the building after closing hours on a weekend? Geez, you're still the same as you were beforeㅡmysterious.
Any who, I did follow what you instructed and waited outside the closed and locked martial arts building. My legs got tired and luckily, there was a provided bench next to some bushes so I quickly took a seat there and continued to wait for you.
You arrived there minutes later, panting and trying your best to catch your breath. You explained to me, "Sorry... I'm late... I had to... get something before I came here."
"What did you get?" I asked you, standing up from the bench to help you over to the bench. You seemed very tired and you needed to sit down. Even the colour from your face looked drained.
You flipped your newly cut hair and let something dangle from your hands. It was something shinyㅡa key. You said, "I needed to get this."
"And... What's that?" I asked you, still a little confused. Then, it struck me. "Seolma..."
"Yes," you answered my suspicion, "it's the key to get in. My uncle owns this place so I just had to stop by his house and sneakily get the key."
"Your uncle owns a martial art place here in Seoul?" I asked you, kind of surprised. That's really cool, Jun. I never got a chance to tell you how cool that is.
You had a smirk on your face and stood up, walking over to the entrance door and unlocking it with the key you stole from your uncle. Wait, I mean, borrowed. Finally, the door unlocked and you stepped aside, saying, "Ladies first."
"Yah, that's just an old saying. You're the expert martial art guy. You go first." I was just making up excuses because I was sort of afraid of the dark. The building inside was nothing but that. You're an expert in martial arts so it would be a good thing if you just walked in first.
You shrugged and headed in first, which was a good thing. I quickly followed you inside, making sure our distance gap wasn't too big and wasn't too small at the same time. I didn't want to look obvious and you mostly look like the teasing type.
You pushed a door open after heading to our right and headed inside the room, switching all the lights open. You closed the door behind you and took a stick from your right. Two sticks, to be exact. You threw the other one to me and luckily, I caught if. If I didn't, I was going to spank you with the stick.
Just kidding. Don't come into my dreams and do just that, Jun. Please, I'm begging you.
"Okay, let's see what you've got," you said, demonstrating a quick move before my eyes. It was really cool to see a master perform. "Try your own moves."
"What, was that your own invented move?" Even with the tease, nothing can hide my fascination of how cool you looked performing. What's even cooler is that you showed me your own move. A move you made yourself. You don't know how special that means to me, Jun.
"Yes," you answered with the same smirk on your face. "Why? Do you want me to show you another because you couldn't get enough of it?"
You were such a teaser. That's another thing I love about you. You always lighten up the mood with your teases.
I playfully and lightly tapped the stick against the top of your head. "Yah, what was that, huh? That's just stupid. And for your information, I think I'm good. I don't want you to rub it in my face."
"Oh, hoo~ What do we have here? A tiger?" you asked me, the smirk still high on your face. I swear, that wasn't going to leave your face for some time.
"Yup, I'm a tiger! Fear me, you little bunny!" I teased back with my own smirk. I think I learnt how to tease from you."Oh? I'm a bunny now? I'm cute and fluffy in your eyes, right?"
"Aniyo! You just look like some baboon, you know that?"
"I shouldn't have called you a tiger. Now that I think about it, you resemble to a monkey," you said.
Aiish, Jun. I'll never forget that, you know? One day, I'm going to think of a better tease. I'm going to be the teacher and master next time. Just you wait.
But the next week broke my heart. You had to leave and head back to China for your studies. You were only in Seoul for a year and it seems like time was up for you.
Remember? I went to the airport and gave you the last goodbye.
"So, you're finally leaving," I said softly behind you.
You turned around, looking at me while you pulled your bag. "I'll miss you a lot, Suri."
"Me too," I whispered back.
You smirked again and said, "Really? You'll miss me a lot, too? Oh hoo~ Song Suri will miss me? Of course you will. You're Song Suri after all and I'm Wen Junhui. Irresistible Kung Fu Panda."
And you were still you. "Yah, bwoya. You are so cheesy, Wen Junhui. Go back to China already."
This time, your teasing self was no longer there. You then looked sincere as you said, "I'll really miss you, Suri-ah. My time with you was short, but it was memorable. I'll never forget our friendship. Take care of yourself, okay? I won't be here to do that for you. I hope the next time we see it each, we would still be friends."
Then, you pulled me into a hug.
I was shocked by that, to be completely honest. I wasn't expecting a hug. Not one from you. But it made sense that you gave me a hug because you were going to move away. For some time. I wouldn't say forever because forever is a long time and I know that one day, we'll see each other again. One day.
When you finally left for the departure terminal, a heavy feeling washed over me. Watching you walk away brought me down because I couldn't make you stay. It wasn't my decision. In fact, it was out of my control now.
Jun, where ever you are now, I hope you're living well. It's been three years since I last saw you but I'll never forget you. Just because someone isn't there with you anymore doesn't mean they're not there in your life.
I know... one day... we'll meet again. And when that time comes, I'll return the hug I never properly returned. I'll say to you words you deserved to hear because I never gave you much of a respond then. I'll be a better friend.
As of now, I'll work on my comeback tease for you.
Love,
Song Suri
