"Did you know there is something called the 'pee-pee teepee'?" Deuce asked while spotting me on my squats a couple days later. We were in the middle of one of our pre-pre-season workouts. Deuce and I had been doing these for the last five-plus years. You didn't maintain your status as the best on the field by getting lazy once you got the contract.
After we had moved into our new neighborhood, we had convinced Deuce and Vanessa to do the same. Vanessa had been wanting out of their condo so that Trace could have a backyard to play in and close friends around, so it worked out great. It meant driving just a couple minutes every morning to the neighborhood gym instead of all the way down to the stadium.
It also meant Addison fell into the habit of going to the gym again too, which had been a goal of hers. Jaxon was up by seven every day anyway, so an eight AM boot camp class was doable for her.
She had met a nice group of women that she enjoyed hanging out with, and they had a good time. I'll admit, when I first met her twenty-five-year-old trainer, Seth, I made sure he knew she was taken. But he turned out to be a nice kid, and he really knew his stuff. He'd even given me some advice on how to adjust my own form a couple times when I was feeling too much pressure in my back.
So yeah. It was working out for us here.
"It's like an upside-down cup, like the ones you get at a water cooler? You put it over his giant baby penis when you change his diaper, so he doesn't squirt you in the face," Deuce said as he helped me get the bar on the rack and change the weight out. "Problem is, he's old enough now that he keeps yanking the damn thing off of himself when he knows he has to go. And he thinks it's funny."
"Are you sure he isn't aiming for you on purpose because you keep telling everyone how big his manhood is?" I asked as Deuce settled himself under the bar and raised it up so he could get in position for his round of squats.
"Hey, he takes after me," Deuce said as he started to squat down. "He needs to be proud of what God gave him. Someday, he's gonna make some woman very happy."
I just rolled my eyes as I counted his reps.
"Hey guys," Addison said, walking up with her phone in her hands.
"Hey baby." I gave her a quick peck just before grabbing the bar and helping Deuce re-rack it. "What's up? Aren't you supposed to be in boot camp?"
Her eyes furrowed as she answered. "I just got a weird call from the pediatrician's office. Are you guys almost done for the day?"
I looked at Deuce, who nodded. "Yeah. We just finished up our last set. We just need to run a few miles on the treadmill and then we're done. Why? Did the doctor say something?"
"I didn't actually talk to the doctor. I talked to a scheduler of some sort. Dr. Laabs wants us to come in to discuss Jaxon's test results."
"What do you mean?" I asked as I wiped my face and neck with a towel. "Is something wrong?"
She sat down and began chewing on her lip. "I don't know. They've never done anything like this before. I asked if the doctor was going to see Jaxon and she said it wasn't necessary to bring him in. This is making me a little nervous, Jason."
I sat down next to her, put my arm around her, and squeezed her shoulder, careful not to get her all sweaty. "I'm sure it's fine, babe. She probably just doesn't want us to drag him into the office and be bored so she can tell us he's allergic to ragweed or something."
"Maybe," she said, but she didn't look convinced. "I just have a weird feeling. Do you think your mom could watch him when we go? The appointment is at ten."
