“Holy shitballs.” I mumbled as I looked at Spencer’s mother. It’s been about a good two and a half years since I’ve seen her face. She looked the same, a little more aged I suppose but not by much. She wasn’t even forty yet, she had Spencer when she was eighteen.
“What the hell are you doing here?” Spencer almost snarled, pushing me behind him.
I rolled my eyes and freed myself from his grip. His mother couldn’t hurt me.
“That’s a nice way to greet your mother.” She said simply, playing with her wedding ring.
“I think we’re both aware that neither one of you deserve my respect.”
I looked at Spencer, holding his hand, trying to calm him down but he just took his hand out of my grip. I sighed and pinched the bridge of my nose.
This isn’t going to end well.
“I just wanted to talk to you, see how you were doing.”
Spencer barked out a laugh before crossing his arms over his chest. “Are you kidding me? You fucking abandoned me and now you want to act like a mom and see how I’m doing? Are you going to tell me to eat my vegetables and floss every night? What the hell do you want Theresa?”
I was shocked by his tone of voice and how his mom just took it. Then again, I can’t really blame Spencer. His life has been shit.
“Why do you just assume that I want something? Did you ever think that maybe your father and I truly cared about your well-being?”
“Who let you in? I changed the code.”
“I have the key.” She said simply.
He turned to look down at me. “Remind me to change the lock.”
I furrowed my brow but nodded my head.
“How’ve you been Kelsey? You’ve grown up in a beautiful young lady.”
I heard Spencer sigh. “Cut the bullshit. What do you want?” Spencer said.
“I’ve missed you.” She said taking a step towards us.
Instinctively Spencer stepped back, pulling me with him. I saw a torn look on his mother’s face and I almost pitied her. Sure she was a bitch, but being rejected by your son must hurt.
“I think you should go now.” I said softly. “Spencer’s had a long day; I don’t think you’re helping.”
She looked at the two of us and shook her head. “I’m not leaving till we talk.”
“You want to talk Theresa? Let’s talk, how about we begin with the fact that you left me alone? Is that why you decided to ship me off to boarding school? Because you didn’t have the decency to say goodbye to my face? Oh! No wait; let’s talk about your scumbag husband! How about we talk about that time when he literally beat me senseless? Or the time he broke one of my ribs? Do you remember that? Man that one stung a little.
“Do you remember that time that he broke my nose? Or how about the time you literally gave me your back while I begged for your help while he almost killed me? Do you have any good ones you would like to share with me? I’m sure Kelsey would love to hear all about it.” Spencer snarled.
“Spencer I-“
“Leave, now.” He commanded.
“Sweetie, I-“
