I heard a light beeping and faint voices. I tried opening my eyes but felt too weak to do so.
“Well what the hell happened to her?” I heard a voice say.
“I don’t know man! I wish I did but since my parents aren’t here they haven’t told me shit!”
“But you’re eighteen.”
“But I’m not her legal guardian or parent. The fuckers think I’m not reliable.”
“Well did they say that?” I heard a third voice say.
“Well… no not exactly. But it was implied Jo!” I heard the voice I had come to realize was my brother.
“This is fucking ridiculous.” I heard a deep voice say. I tried to figure out who it belonged to but I couldn’t quite figure it out.
I sighed inwardly and tried opening my eyes but I couldn’t. I felt a panic overtake me and I struggled to open my eyes or just say something but I realized my body wouldn’t let me. I tried to wiggle my fingers or my toes but nothing was working. It was like I was trapped inside my body and couldn’t cry for help.
“J-Jason, the machine is going crazy.”
“Huh?” I heard my brother go.
“Jason call a nurse!” I heard a female voice say.
“Help, someone please help me!” I heard a voice shout.
“Kels? Kelsey, come on relax for me baby girl please.” I heard a soothing voice say. The second I heard him say baby girl I realized it was Spencer. “Come on Kels, please just keep breathing and keep your heartbeat steady. I need you to keep that heartbeat steady. Don’t panic, you’ll wake up soon, I promise. Just do me a favor and hang in there and keep breathing evenly.”
I felt myself calm down but still no matter how hard I tried I still panicked and couldn’t bring my heartbeat all the way down.
“Son I’m going to need you to step back.”
“I’m not leaving her.”
“You’re going to have to, you can’t be in here.”
“I’m not leaving, I’ll be damned if I do.”
“Young man we need all the space and privacy we can get. You need to go outside with the rest of the people.”
“No, I told you, I’m not leaving her side!” Spencer shouted.
“Don’t make me call security.”
“You can call the National Guard but that will not get me out of this room. I will sit in the chair by the door but I am not stepping foot out of this room.”
“Spence, come on man we’ll see her later.”
“No, I caused this, I’m staying.” He said firmly.
I heard Jason sigh and step somewhere. “It’s not your fault.”
“I’m the one who said the words that caused her to run away. I’m the one who hit a nerve, and I’m the one who is to be held responsible. Now, if you don’t mind, let go of my fucking arm. Because if you don’t, I swear to god as much as I love you as a brother, I will not hesitate on giving you a black eye. I’m not leaving Kelsey’s room Jason. You can but I will stay here until she wakes up.”
I heard a sigh of defeat and felt something being poked into my arm. Eventually I stopped panicking and having a mental break down. I felt myself slowly relax and drift off into sleep again.
