In the first hours of the following morning, the survivors of the battle worked hard at rebuilding the town's perimeter defenses. The first and most important priority for the exterminators and Myself was to get the Rad shield back online. the Rad shield was developed by the late Dr. Malakai Enoran early in the war. it was intended to be used in order to protect towns from the fallout from the war, but in today's world it protects from the Rad storms that blow through frequently. Rad storms are similar in appearance to a dust storm, but the dust is highly radioactive and causes a gruesome and almost instantaneous death. Those who survive are typically dead within the hour. any area of unprotected skin is turned into a cracked mess of scabs that cause excruciating pain at even the slightest movement or touch. there are a very small, incredibly lucky few who have managed to survive and recover to full health and in the process gained a radiation resistant thick outer skin. We are called The Dustborn. I am one of them. It was the worst pain i have ever experienced, like my outer skin was shattered glass that with every cough and quiver cut into my nerves and muscles. it is something i never want to experience again. it is because of my "special ability" that i was chosen to climb up to the highest point and repair the shield in the face of an oncoming Rad storm. Which meant that after fixing it i was left outside to wait out the storm, with only my thoughts and the gentle hum of my radiation mask to keep me company.
