Chapter 7

It was time. It had been a year and two months since I'd been rescued by Nagato from the landfill site. A year and two months since Orochimaru had poisoned me and given me amnesia. A year and two months since I'd found out I was worth something. A year and two months since I stopped being useless Ayako. The moment had finally arrived. All my training, all my hard work had lead up to this. We were finally going to make our move on the Hidden Leaf. Time to show how useful I could be. It was eight o'clock and the stars were out. The sky was a beautiful shade of air-force Blue. The moon shone bright and illuminated the world. Any other day I would've stopped and stared at it, taking in its wonder. Not today. Today I had a mission.

We were advancing on the main gate pretty quickly. I turned to look at my companions. Nagato and Yahiko on my left, Konan and Hoshi on my right. I was nervous, but at the same time I was tingling with excitement. So much so that, my hand was shaking. I turned to Nagato. He smiled at me and I could tell he felt the same way as me. I was so curious to see what I could do in an actual battle. When we were ten feet away from the main gate we stopped. One, to make sure the guards were off duty, and two, to check everyone knew what the plan was.

'Ok,' he said. 'Konan you'll go up to the Hokage tower and make sure he is engaged. Don't let him out of his office! It's crucial.' Konan nodded. 'Nagato, you and Ayako are to get up onto the Hokage heads monument and attack from there. Ayako you'll use your eyes from there so you will be able to cover the entire village easily.' Nagato and I nodded. 'As for me, I'm going to go somewhere in the middle with Hoshi and fight anyone trying to get in the way.' he said.

He looked at us all taking in our eager faces. Nagato looked confused. 'Why aren't you going up to the Hokage tower with Konan? It would make more sense having two shinobi against a Kage?' he said.

He was right. Although Konan was a powerful shinobi, she wasn't a Kage. The title of Kage was usually given to incredibly powerful shinobi, and Yahiko, being the overly obsessive person he was, should have wanted to keep her safe. But, apparently not.

'Konan has said she can do it herself. She's strong Nagato, she'll be fine. I believe in her.' he sounded unconvinced but we let it slide.

We looked at the main gate. The guards had gone. Nothing could stop us getting in. I looked over to Nagato to see if we could go and noticed that Yahiko was talking to him. I didn't want to be rude, but I walked over to them anyway. As I got there Yahiko left, staring seriously at Nagato.

'What's up with him?' I asked.

'He told me to look after you no matter what.' Nagato said.

'Well of course you will. You wouldn't let your 'secret weapon' get killed, would you?'

'No of course not. But it's not just that.' he said.

'What is it then?' I asked, confusion running through my head.

'He said that I have to protect you no matter what,' he emphasised the 'no matter' part, 'He means, I must die before letting you be killed.' he said, solemnly.

I opened my mouth. Were my eyes that valuable? How had I hidden these things my entire life? I didn't want Nagato to die. Especially not for me. He was nice and special to me and I didn't think it was fair that he could possibly die because of me not being able to defend myself. I had to make sure I did.

We all looked over to Yahiko, our leader. He smiled and swiftly said 'Well, let's get started.' which sent everyone on a frenzy. Nagato and I started running around the village to get to the monuments. It took a little while, but when we finally got there, we positioned ourselves so that we could see the entire village. I knew that the signal would be when everyone was in position. As soon as Konan sent a signal to Yahiko, Yahiko would send one to Nagato. As soon as the weather started changing they'd start.
