I knew I was done the moment I locked myself in my car. The sirens behind me were louder, and I pressed harder on the gas pedal, filling the car with carbon monoxide.
Then I fell.
I couldn't see where I was, I was just falling into a dark bottomless pit, a single light shone on me only. It was like sinking to the bottom of a pool. Until I softly hit the ground, falling in a way that could only be described as very Hollywood-damsel-in-distress-like.
For seconds, I forgot about where I was, or what just happened. Then it hit me all at once; I'm dead. I'm not in pain, and I feel at peace. I'm dead.
Suddenly, lights flickered on, illuminating the room to reveal multiple frames with me at stages of my life.
"Hello." I looked up at a face. I didn't know him, but I did at the same time. "Didn't expect to see you so early."
"Who are you?" I allowed him to pull me up. "I've seen and heard you before."
"You know how the day you were born, there was a massacre at that hospital? Well, I was the guy who stood in front of the door leading to the Nursery-"
"And got shot over 13 times; you saved my life!" I instantly warmed up to him.
"Indeed I did. And I became your counsellor from the moment I died- sort of like a guardian angel type of way." He beamed. "My name's Riker Lynch, but call me Riker."
"That's strange, that's what I want to call my first child if it's a boy. Well, what I would have." I shrugged. The same second I did so, he backhanded me.
"What was that nonsense back there?! Why are you here?! You're 20 years old!" He barked.
"You should know my life isn't easy." I replied, feeling the mark of his hand on my cheek. It didn't hurt, it just felt funny.
"That isn't the way out, but more on that later. It's protocol I show you your memories." He shrugged off the matter sharpish, leading me to the first frame, which showed me as a tiny little bean. "You were so cute-"
"Why is my head so big? And why am I screaming?"
"Have you ever seen a newborn?" Riker looked at me, a smile on his lips.
"Yes but- never mind." I shrugged it out, moving on.
We looked at key stages of my life, but quickly reached the last frame which consisted of my car being pryed open, and my parents knelt by my covered dead body. I gasped.
"Your actions have consequences, dear." I looked at him. "What? You're like a daughter to me."
"I didn't mean for them to be this hurt. They ignored me on a daily basis." I said.
"They were working night and day to get you a new car." He replied, and then I really did begin to cry. Riker put his arms around me.
"Is it too late?"
He nodded. "My job is to help you out as a spirit, to make sure you don't become some random poltergeist or start haunting your family."
"I probably will."
"You need to get some sleep now, come with me." He said. "Tomorrow is going to be a long day."
"Why's that?"
"You committed suicide. The Life Committee won't take that lightly." I looked at him clueless. "It will make more sense tomorrow."
