It was a warm, clear-skied summer morning. Rose sat on the grass, staring up at the sky, trying to show her friends. The sun was rising and the sky was a pinkish yellow. The long grass swayed around her ankles in the light morning breeze. Rose was an early waker, always getting up to see the sunrise. "Ugh," she sighed, "the connection is bad. The connection is never bad. I'll see you guys later." She signed off of her MindChatt.A few hours later, her parents called her in for lunch. She ran inside, and, as usual, lunch was a plain grilled cheese sandwich, her favourite.
As Rose was munching on her sandwich, her parents reminded her that it was the day before her 14th birthday.
"Rose, honey, what would you like to do for your birthday?" asked her mom.
Yes! thought Rose, she forgot that I need to get my chip replaced.
"Remember to take into account the fact that you'll need some time to get used to your new chip," Rose's dad added as he reached for another sandwich.
Rose groaned, "Ugggghhhhhh, why do I need a new one when my current one functions perfectly fine."
"You know the rules honey," her mom answered, "by the time a child has turned 14, they have to have gotten a new Chip."
A Chip was probably the most important thing to the human race at that point, but Rose saw no need for it. They read for you, they wrote for you, basically everything you needed, they did. But she could read and write without it, a secret she kept to herself, and wanted it to stay that way. Nevertheless, she had to get one, just like everyone else.
