Have you ever just stopped and realized that we don't ever have a choice in life. When we get down to it, we're all going to end up dying and we don't have a choice against it. So why do even bother thinking and arguing about our choices when they will never even matter in the end. We may think that our choices will lead to 'fantastic miracles' in the future, but I doubt that they actually do. We think that we won't ever hurt those that we care for by choosing not to hurt them and keeping them close to you. But when either you or them leaves, it'll hurt them or is more than anything and then we won't have a choice but to hurt those we care for.
