Ela wakes up to what she's been dreading her whole life... her 15th birthday. Most birthdays would be worthy of a celebration. But today she could be chosen.

She immediately wishes she hadn't opened her eyes. There was a bright light flooding in from her window behind her curtains. She squinted her eyes, hoping not to be blinded. Shielding her eyes to alleviate the force of the burning sun, she glanced at the clock. Much to her dismay, it read 9am. She had to get up.

She slowly got out of bed and sauntered over to the window, ignoring the blasting light, she opened her curtains. This certainly woke her up. She hadn't realized how truly bright the day really was. When her eyes adjusted to the burning sun's wrath, she observed gorgeous birds soaring through the crystal-clear blue sky. It was a perfect day for a not so perfect happening.

She smiled until the realization of the events that were about to take place hit her. For now she would push that image out of her head and look at the sweeping, lush green hills transitioning into jagged snow-capped mountains. It was all so beautiful. That's all she needed to think about. Not the fact that she might not be coming back home... ever. That hurt too much. This didn't. Ela had always believed that there was a positive part of everything, this was her positive. Standing right here, in the golden morning sun.

She forced herself to pull her eyes away from the window. Ela could hear her mother calling her from the kitchen, so, still wearing her night gown, she walked down the hallway towards the kitchen, feeling as if every step brought her one foot closer to her death.
