I heard the door bell ring and because it was six o'clock in the morning and I was the only one awake, I got out of bed in my boxers mind you and answered the door.
I half expected it to be simon or one of our annoying neighbors.
What I did not expect was her.
She was in a pretty light blue dress instead of her cheer uniform. I swear that dress was a replica of the one she wore on the first day of second grade. Why do I remeber these sort of things? Any ways it didn't really matter because she was crying.
I open the door and she attacks me in a bear hug. She didn't day anything, for awhile we just stood there hugging... it took me a moment but then I realized today was her dad's birthday.
"It's okay Laney, I promise"
I didn't really have a right to promise anything but it felt like the right thing to say.
I realized I called her Laney. I can't even remember the last time I said that. It was my nick name for her, when I was younger I felt it suited her better than Layna.
"I'm sorry but I needed to see you"
She said as she loosens her grip and pecks my cheek, this used to be a old habit of hers to kiss my cheek after she gave me a hug.
"I understand" I say in a calm voice.
She finally stopped sobbing although tears were still rolling down her face.
"I didn't know who else would understand, my mom's on vacation and none of my friends would've understood." She was rambling on.
"I understand" I say in the same tone of voice.
"I didn't know who else to come to" Layna whispered.
She stared into my eyes with her bright blue ones and says
"I'm so sorry for ignoring you"
I finally knew that she was truly sorry. I was sorry too, for hating her all these years for ignoring me.
"I missed you E" She says as she pulls me in for another hug.
I wonder why she picked three years later to stop ignoring me, but all I said was
"I missed you too L"
