Caiden POV
Eagerly grabbing the notebook from Sam, I swiftly sit at my desk staring at the writing on the cover. It's my father's scrolled handwriting, the memory of his death flashes behind my eyelids.
Him kneeling over my mother's bloody body, crumbled on the green grass, which was stained red. His palms covering his face as he wept. Watching from across the field, I yelled for him, I saw the rogue behind him - readying a fatal blow. How could he not know he was there and why was he blocking the mind link? He looked at me as the blade came down, severing his head from his body. That one look told me everything I needed to know and it still haunts me.
Shaking my head to erase the painful memory, I take a deep breath and open the notebook that lies in front of me. Flipping through the pages I notice each one is recorded as a journal entry with a date.
I figure starting at the end will be more beneficial, so I skip ahead to where the writing stops. Interestingly enough I find the last entry with no date, but a title instead - Dylan named next Alpha. A grunt escapes my lips as I look up to Sam,
"The last entry is about Dylan." I pull up a chair and motion for him to sit next to me as I read the entry aloud.
"A wandering gypsy caravan traveled through the territory after the Alpha selection was announcement. The young ones loved them, reading tarot cards, offering palm reading, and all the other fortune telling games. One woman offered something she called 'special gifts', fortunately few people took her up on this offer. The one person known to have accepted her gift, died instantly. Be wary of the traveling gypsy."
I look to Sam, my eyebrows furrow as my eyes squint.
"What does that have to do with Dylan?" Sam asks.
"I don't think anything, why?" Shrugging his shoulders he looks down to his feet and a warm glow rises to his cheeks.
"I don't know. I guess since the title was about him being named Alpha," he pauses to look at me I raise my eyebrows for him to continue, "I thought maybe there was a connection. Did you know he was named Alpha?" Before I can answer, Dylan walks in.
"Dylan." I nod with a grunt.
"Caiden. Sam." He looks refreshed. The run did him good, unfortunately I didn't run.
"What happened the summer you were named Alpha?" I ask bluntly, all prior anger rushing back into my system.
"What do you mean?" His eyes narrow and his lips curl into a lopsided smirk.
"Specifically with the gypsy." At the sound of gypsy, all expression falls from his face, his complexion goes pale. For a second I'm worried he might faint.
"Who died?" I ask when he doesn't respond. His eyes swirl black and I feel power radiate off him, rippling through the room. I narrow my eyes and tighten my lips.
"Answer!" I growl. I'm the Alpha of this pack, he will obey me! I exercise my alpha dominance over his willpower, he's strong but I'm stronger. He finally closes his eyes with a sigh and takes a deep breath, exhaling slowly. I watch him cautiously for any indication of subordination, but when he opens his eyes - they're once again pure green.
"My mom." He whispers in a strained tone.
The corner of my right eye starts to twitch as fear floods my body. Closing my eyes, I ball my fists so tight that my nails dig into my skin.
"Caiden? Are you okay?" Sam asks, placing a hand on my shoulder. Shaking my head, I begin to filter through all the mind links in the pack, looking for the person projecting this predominate feeling of fear.
