"Mitchie hurry up!" My best friend Kirstin yelled as I dawdled down the smooth sandy beach her and Scott we're currently stood at the other end of .I was taking in my surroundings and currently didn't care for the sound of her voice as she called me over to spend time with them , so I continued with my own train of thought ..thinking all of the things I'd probably never share with anyone. The sand wasn't rocky as such but there were still the occasional smooth grey pebbles which would've been extremely easy to trip on if you weren't watching your step carefully, and with how accident prone Scott was he had already tripped on at least 5 just getting himself down to the water front with Kirstie .
The sand it's self was very yellow toned and smooth , a beach you could run down with your best friends and completely abandon your shoes in the process if you felt like it , which often people did and happy couples and friends would be spotted enjoying eachothers company on the beach. The sunset in front of me was nothing but beautiful with the mixing palette of oranges , pinks and yellows that nobody could ever get tired of looking at . I pulled out my phone and took a quick photo so I didn't forget the moment I was in when I looked back months down the line, maybe I'd even put it on Instagram if it ended up turning out well.
"Mitch?!" It was Scotts turn to yell at me this time.
I looked up and signalled over for him to wait with one of my hands , still not interested in whatever they were doing down by the water . I set myself down in the sand previously below me and ran it through my fingertips, laughing slightly at how much of a child I felt myself becoming . Before I knew it there was a large figure stood in front of me blocking my view of the sunset . Without even looking up to see who it was I got angry at them for blocking my view.
"Excuse me I'm trying to watch the-" they cut me off almost instantly with a soothing time to their voice , that my mind instantly recognised at Scott's.
"Come and watch it with your best friends then Mitchie" he offered his hand to help me up but I didn't take it , instead I pulled myself up so I didn't drag him down into the sand with me "you're covered in sand now Mitch".
"I know" I giggled , brushing it all of off myself delicately , being careful not to ruin my clothes and cover Scott in sand in the process whilst proceeding to walk beside Scott so we could rejoin Kirstie by the water.
"You made it" Kirstie beamed at me and threw her arms around my neck . I briefly hugged her back before we all found a little dry spot by the water we could settle, without getting hit when the tide decided to draw itself inwards . Kirstie had found me and her a rock that wasn't too uncomfortable and just big enough for the both of us whilst Scott had settled beside us in the sand .
"It's beautiful" Scott whispered , barely audibly . I looked down at him and smiled and he shared the same smile as his gaze met mine.
"I know" .
"I wasn't talking about the sunset" he joked .
"I know" I replied whilst I playfully shoved him away from me and he gave a look of fake disgust but eventually settled himself back against the rock with his hand resting on my knee . Kirstie was way too invested in the sunset in front of us and the way it reflected against the ocean to even notice our playful behaviour . I put my hand on Scotts and gave it a light squeeze before he flipped his hand over and took mine in his own .
It was completely unexpected and not like Scott at all but he didn't think twice about it as he laced our fingers together and brought our hands down into his lap , and for some unknown reason I didn't think twice when I felt my finger respond to the touch and wrap around his hand too . I looked down at him , confused but my look wasn't returned when I saw him now in the same sunset filled trance as Kirstie was.
It probably should've been weird having your best friend hold your hand when the closest you'd came to anything intimate was tickling eachother but it wasn't . It came as a new found source of comfort to me so I didn't let go , not until we were in complete darkness on the beach and Kirstie had fallen asleep with her head against my shoulder .
