It was only twelve in the afternoon when the police finally managed to get all of the students to the police station. By the time they had questioned everyone, it was nearly eleven at night. Nobody was allowed to make phone calls until all the questioning was over. Only Drew was released without being charged. His mother had waited for him the whole time during the questioning, and his father came down at around six, as soon as he got out of work. They offered to help in any way possible, and the officer who spoke to them told them they would call if they needed any help. Drew’s father took away his keys and phone, and said that they would talk more when they got home. Drew seemed to understand.
Rudy called his mom, who came down to the station in hysterics. She was a large, red-faced woman with two tiny twin six-year-olds. She and had divorced Rudy’s father when he found out that she was having twin that weren’t his.
Dustin made the next call, and his mother came down as well. She could’ve been his sister, she was so young. Dustin’s actual half-sister was eleven. She cried as her mother screamed at Dustin loud enough for the whole world to hear.
Leo made the call and his grandmother came for him, his legal guardian since his parents died in a car crash when he was five. Gregg’s lesbian mothers both came for him, one crying, the other threatening to get the best lawyer money could buy from behind large dark sunglasses and bright lipstick, demanding that they just try and prove her baby guilty. She looked like a smoker.
Anthony’s brother came for him, and had to prove that he was in fact Anthony’s legal guardian. Then he asked how to get a lawyer.
Sean didn’t have anyone to call. He didn’t have a mom, and when he tried to call his aunt, she spoke loud enough over the phone so that the whole room knew she was completely drunk, wherever she was. Sean hung up embarrassed and asked quietly if he could visit his father in cell B43for his lawyer’s number.
Luis’s father didn’t actually come down. His gruff voice could be heard saying that he’d find the number for Luis’s mom’s lawyer and call him in the morning, and asked that next time he was arrested he didn’t make his damn phone call so late at night.
Lizzy’s mom came in shreds, sobbing as her husband yelled at his step-daughter, telling her that she was a little brat and would be grounded for eternity. He paused only to offer a few flustered apologies to the officers. Lizzy herself seemed let down as her step-father paid her bail.
Matt came last, and his foster mom came down. She was a middle-aged woman with glasses much like one of Gregg’s mothers who’d fostered dozens of kids and knew the station all too well. She chatted casually with some of the officers, who assured her that they’d call the “usual lawyer” for her. She apologized repeatedly, and left to a car full of kids that clearly were not related.
The kids were taken to different holding cells, two or three to a stall. Matt and Sean; Dustin and Rudy; Leo, Gregg, and Anthony. Leo cried until Anthony yelled at him to shut the fuck up (he was trying to sleep.) Gregg told him to calm down and then backed off when he saw the look on Anthony’s face. Dustin and Rudy got in a loud, emotional argument and had to be separated. Matt and Sean lay quiet for a while in their bunks, Sean on top, Matt below.
“I can’t believe Drew pussied out,” Sean muttered finally in a bitter tone, hands under his head as he stared at the ceiling.
Matt said nothing. He was really beginning to hate Sean.
“I mean come on, at least tell us that you’re quittin’ before it, don’t just not show up.”
“Whatever,” Matt muttered.
“What do you mean, ‘whatever?’ This was your fight, man! This was about you gettin’ back at the punk ass who-“
“No, it wasn’t,” Matt cut him off angrily. “It was a stupid, pointless fight about looking tough for the rest of the school. Drew’s a good kid; he did the right thing.”
“What are you, a faggot?” Sean spat.
“So what if I was? Piss off.”
