I looked out of the safe room door, watching the rotting figures limping around the yard, searching for their next meal. They seemed to avoid the door as if my angry glare drove them away. The stench tingled my nostrils and made my eyes water. It was disgusting but I was too busy hating the horrid creatures to actually avoid it.We shouldn't be here; we should be in City Hall trying to get help. I turned and looked at my team mates, who were staring sympathetically at me. There's Francis, thirty-eight though he swears that he's thirty-four. He's 6 foot with shaved black hair that is definitely receding, it doesn't matter how much he denies it. He has a goatee and his whole appearance just screams biker, though he's terrified of the things. Then there's Bill, a stern 75 year old war veteran. He's 5 foot 11, has shaggy grey hair and a small grey moustache. He is the most experienced in our situation. We look up to him like the leader he is.
"Zoey, we have to go. Now," Bill said in his husky voice. I nodded grabbing my assault rifle, pushed past Francis, who yelled at me for it and kicked open the door.
"Let's go," I growled through gritted teeth. They pissed me off, these vile creatures pissed me off more than I could say. At least I get to shoot at them, I suppose.
We stepped out into the open, catching the attention of the bloodthirsty zombies. I ran off toward a small group of them that looked oblivious to the people running out, hitting them over the head with my gun before planting my bullets in their heads. I fell forward slightly as a zombie jumped up on me and I tried my best to fight them off. It was hard as it's rotting hand dug into my shoulder while tried to bite my neck.
"You're a fucking zombie, not a vampire. Get off!" I yelled.
My team were fighting their own little party on the other side of the path. I thought it was over, I was getting too tired as I tried to get one bloody zombie off my back.
"Zoey, watch out!" Francis boomed then shot the zombie, almost hitting my shoulder in the process.
"Francis, I swear to God. If that was on purpose, I'm going to let all these zombies get you."
"Whoa, calm down. It was an accident, all right?" he shouted. He raced out of the yard and into the street ahead of us, leaving me and Bill behind. That guy knew how to wind me up; he didn't even have to try. I looked at Bill in a panic before he followed Francis into the street. I fought off the couple of zombies that were creeping up on us then ran off to join them.
"Bill? Francis? Where are you?" I called in a whisper. I eventually found them, hiding behind a van, talking and reloading their guns. I joined them, squatting behind the van.
"Hold up, Zo. Look over there," Bill said quietly. I glanced around the van and saw a girl, crying.
"Looks like she's upset. Should we help her?" I went to step forward but Bill held me back.
"Take another look at her, sweetheart." I did as I was told and realised that this girl had claws that were about a foot long and she was paler than anyone I'd ever seen. I knew she wasn't human. Not any more.
"Oh God. What is she?" I gasped.
"That is a witch, love. Don't attack her, go near her or point your flash-light or you'll regret it," Bill explained. The crying continued but it seemed to be getting quieter. "Right, she's going away. Come on."
Sneaking past the witch was not easy. She kept crossing our path which almost got us killed. My heart beating faster and faster the longer it took to get past her. I swear, I was about to have a panic attack. We found an underground tunnel near the town's park. It looked dark and dingy and I didn't really want to go in but I knew we had to. It seemed like the only way out. We were walking through it for almost two hours when we found a room. We readied our guns.
