I pulled away slowly, embarrassed at my uncharacteristic act. Bella wolf whistled, causing me to blush. "About time!" I unwrapped my arms from around Owen's neck and sat back on my heels.
"Sorry" I whispered. Owen just smiled. "No need" "Oi, Erin! Come on" Maria yelled, waving her freshly bandaged hand at me.
I hurried over to my team, earning more wolf whistles, and claps on the back from those that had seen our kiss. "Shut up" I mumbled, face still red.
We lined up to collect our medals and trophies, each girl with a massive grin on their faces. We shook hands with the founder of the cup, and the head of the rugby association for girls.
Finally, the founder handed the silver trophy to me, and I thrust it high up in the air, as the team, and I, descended into cheers. However the ceremony was not finished, and the association head cleared his throat.
We quietened immediately as he started to speak. "All through out the match, players from both teams were excellent, showing both great skill and determination. It was a clean match, fairly played." As he said this Maria glared at the girl who had broken her fingers.
"However, as tradition, we have to award the player of the match, and, I have conferred with the referee, and it is so, that this award will go to a superb kicker, who captained her team well, and scored one of the best drop-goals I have seen in person."
I blushed and Owen crossed his arm over his chest, 'Not fair' he mouthed at me. I smiled, at his sulking and at the smaller trophy being awarded to me.
"Thank you" I said, after shaking his hand. "Excellent play" he replied, before we both smiled for the pictures. Five minutes later, we returned to our changing room in high spirits.
I removed my boots and tied on my trainers, after pulling on tracksuit bottoms. I slipped my hoodie over my head and took a swig from my water bottle. "Speech, Speech, Speech!" My teammates cheered.
I rolled my eyes. "Well done everyone, as decided, we shall meet up later, at six for a celebratory dinner in Eddie Rockets, you all played brilliantly." I bowed and made my way back out to Owen and Bella, bag slung over my shoulder.
"Cars this way" Bella said over her shoulder as she made her way through the carpark. I followed her and the weight on my shoulders was lifted as Owen took my bag. "Thanks," I smiled warmly.
He wrapped one arm around my shoulders, "No problem" I opened the boot of the car and Owen threw my bag in. I got into the back seat, pushing aside Owen's bag. Bella drove off, and turned the radio on.
When we finally reached our flat, I retrieved my bag from the boot and then, once inside dumped it on my bed. "I'll shower quickly, then we can talk?" I suggested to Owen.
He nodded, "Good, you stink"I punched his arm before choosing some fresh clothes to wear and disappearing into the bathroom.
Twenty minutes later, I stepped into my room, wet hair tied up into a plait. I sat beside Owen and he put his phone away. He swivelled to face me. "Why didn't you tell me?" He asked.
I swallowed, I was waiting for this question. "I, I don't know, it seemed stupid to ask, and it was hard to bring up. You're a brilliant rugby player, why would you be interested in a stupid rugby final?"
I lowered my head, embarrassed yet again. "It's not just a stupid rugby final. It means a lot to you, and to me. Besides, you are an amazing player! Why don't you try playing for a better club, or Ireland?"
"I was trialled, but I turned it down." "Why?" Owen asks, horrified. "I was busy, with college, besides its a hobby" "But" "Just leave it Farrell!" I snap.
Owen stops, and falls silent. I immediately regret my harsh words. "Owen, I'm sorry, I'm just tired from the match, and from the exams." He looks up at me and smiles, I smile back weakly. "Okay,"
I lie back on the bed, exhausted and he wraps his arm around me again. He kisses the top of my head. " I missed you" he admits. "I thought you would" I tease.
He prods my side and I squeal. "You didn't miss me?" I shake my head. "Really?" I shake my head again. He leans in close, "Will you miss this?" He asks, and kisses me softly.
My phone beeps with a text and I pull away reluctantly. I check it, it's a text from Ellie, a girl on my rugby team, telling us that the booking is in half an hour. I stretch and get up.
"Unfortunately, I have to go to a dinner with my teammates right now, and no you can't come" I told him as he turned on the puppy eyes. "Well then, you'll have to make it up to me" He says, crossing his arms over his chest. "How?" I ask, smiling at him sulking, or at least trying to.
"Well, dinner tomorrow night might help" He suggests. I make a face, "I might be busy, I'll have to check my diary" "Crying over how little friends you have is not 'Busy'" He teases. I stick my tongue out. "HAHA"
He stands up too and hugs me. "Ermm, okay" I pat his back. "I'm off to my hotel, the match is at 2, I'll pick you up at 7, yeah?" I nod as he releases me and get ready to go out.
I walk through the busy streets of Dublin, with a massive smile plastered on my face. Today was a good day...
