"Close your eyes, it's a surprise!" His hand was laid against my face. "Okay, okay." I heard the whoosh of a door and the sweet smell of pastries. Derek uncovered my face, and we were standing at a table. "Surprise, happy 2 year anniversary!" He had a huge grin on his face. "Awe thank you baby, this is so sweet." I kissed him on the cheek and we sat down. We were at my favourite restaurant, Road Side Grill. While Derek was checking the menu, I was silently scolding myself. Why? Because I forgot it was our 2 year anniversary!
                                                                 ***************
I was freaking out because I didn't get a gift or anything for that matter. A waiter came over to take our drink orders. "Good evening, my name is Tye and I will be your server. Our special today is baked potato and grilled steak." While he was speaking I was quickly scanning the menu for something to eat. "Would you guys like to order your drinks?" I looked over at Derek the see what he thought. "Sure, that would be great." The waiter nodded. "Ma'am, would you like to order first?" The waiter had his notebook out and didn't want to keep him waiting. "Sure. I'll have a bud light lime please." He wrote very fast. "For sure. And you sir?" Derek  looked up from something on his lap. "Uh, I'll just have some Coke please." The waiter finished writing and rushed away. I tried to see what was on Derek's lap but couldn't get a good look. "So, 2 years!" I tried to make conversation, but he seemed to be distracted. "I'll be right back." He stood up and walked to the bathroom. The waiter came back and gave us our drinks. "Thank you." I smiled and took a sip of my drink. For some reason I felt insulted, Derek brought me here, and he doesn't even want to speak with me.

                                                           ****************

Several minutes later, Derek came bounding out of the washroom. "Sorry honey, just had to deal with some stuff." He did seem apologetic, it was probably work stuff. "I think I'm going to try the chicken Parmesan!" I said excitedly. It took Derek a while to say something. "Cool, I'm going to have a steak." He looked back at his lap. I frowned and tried to ignore it. The waiter came back and was ready to take our orders. "So I'll have your chicken Parmesan, with a Cesar salad on the side." "And I'll have your classic steak with barbecued veggies on the side." The waiter finished writing and sped away. "Honey, what are you working on?" I finally had to ask. "Just some stuff, doesn't matter." He put it away and looked up at me. He grabbed my hand and smiled, "I love you, I hope you know that." I started to get tears in my eyes. "I love you too." He smiled and kissed my hand. He lifted up his drink, "To us. Cheers!" I lifted my beer up and we clinked drinks. I gazed into is adorable eyes and got lost. A waitress came over and put our meals in front of us. "Thank you." Derek definitely dug into his meal. I laughed because of the sauce on his cheek. I took a bit of my chicken and was in heaven. After our meals were finished, he grabbed my hand and we walked silently to our car.
