I was seated on the cold toilet seat, looking at the plastic stick in my hand.
I was shocked. It was positive.
"Mommy, are you okay?" I heard my 2 year old son, Benjamin, asked from outside the bathroom door. I quickly threw the pregnancy test in the cabinet under the sink.
I opened the door, and my son stood there clutching his blanket, crying.
"Oh, honey. What's wrong?" I asked, picking him up and placing him on my hip.
"I-I-I thought you had left me," he stuttered.
"I could never leave you, silly boy," I cooed, tickling his side.
He giggled. "When is Daddy coming home?" he asked as I started walking into the kitchen.
I looked at the clock on the stove that blinked 4:35. "In about and hour," I replied.
"Do you want a snack?" I asked Benjamin.
"Yes, please."
I got him his favorite snack from the pantry; teddy grahams.
I leaned on the granite counter top in the kitchen. Blake had insisted on getting the most expensive counter top that was available.
I watched Benjamin gnaw on his teddy grahams. He was a replica of Blake, just younger. A few weeks after our wedding, Blake and I found out that I was pregnant. We were both so excited, and once Benjamin was born, we showered him with attention.
I was afraid to tell Blake that I was pregnant again, because when we had gotten back into the usual routine of love making, he was persistent on using protection, but I can count a few times that protection wasn't on our minds and it didn't end up being used.
When Benjamin had finished his snack, I put him down for a nap.
I was sitting on the couch in the living room, watching season 6 of 'Awkward', when I heard Blake come through the front door. I heard him come up behind me and he gave me a quick kiss on the lips.
"How was work, today?" I asked, putting the TV on mute and walking over to where he was.
He started to undo his tie. "Stressful," he answered.
I placed my hand on his back and soothingly rubbed it.
"I have something to tell you," I whispered to him.
He worriedly looked at me. "What is it, Nick?" He asked, caressing my face.
"You might want to sit down," I told him before I broke the news. "You might not be to happy with what I'm going to tell you."
He nodded his head and went to go sit at the dinning room table. I followed and sat across from him.
"So, today I took a pregnancy test, and... It was positive," I whispered.
Blake smiled. "Why would you think I would be upset?"
"Because once Benji was born, you were always being cautious and using protection," I said, putting emphasis on 'protection'.
"Oh," Blake said, sighing. "I was only using protection, because I thought you needed a break. If you didn't want me to use a condom, all you had to do was ask," Blake said, wiggling his eyebrows up and down.
I laughed.
"But let's not worry about the past. Let's think about the future and the child that we're going to bring into this world." Blake took my hand in his. "Come on, there's something we need to do."
Blake and I both walked to Benjamin's room. He was still fast asleep.
Blake lightly shook Benjamin awake.
"Daddy?" Benjamin asked, rubbing his eyes.
"Hey, Benji," Blake greeted. "Mommy and I have some news for you. You're going to have a little brother or sister!" Blake cheered.
Benjamin got up and started jumping up and down on his bed. "Yay!" He squealed. "I'm going to be a big brother!"
"Thank you, Mommy!" He cheered, blowing me a kiss.
"You're welcome, sweetie," I said as Blake pulled me in for a hug.
"I love you," Blake said as he pulled away.
"I love you too," I replied, kissing Blake passionately on his lips.
