The next day at school was worse than the first. When I arrived my fifth period class, I was greeted by Camari looking curiously at me. The girl that ruined my life and Willa's. Willa... I took a seat farthest away from Camari as possible. She was too busy talking to her new posse to notice me take my seat. She's all of a sudden become the popular and snotty girl of our grade.
After class, Camari unexpectedly goes right in front of my face. I try and avoid contact. "Hello Mae. I see you are still miss depressed girl." Her friends laugh at that. "But I wanted to make you an offer." She smirked at me, and when I said nothing, she continued. "I wanted you to join us." When she says that she gestures to her minions.
I finally look up at her and she smirks at me. "And what would you like in return?" I said coldly, clearly not interested in her offer.
"What do you mean?" She asks.
"You always want something in return. I know that you wouldn't just let me join your friends. You want something from me."
"Smart girl. Leave us." She said, gesturing to her posse. The scampered away and left me alone with the his monster. "You know what happened with Willa." At the sound of her name I flinched. "I want you to put that behind you and not bring it up again. Then, and only then will I let you join me in being a popular girl."
I clench my fists and glare at her. "I will never forget about Willa. And I will never forget what you did to her." I snapped and walked away from her. I know I'm going to have to pay for this later. Nobody ever gets the last word against Camari. She always has to get pay back. But I'll think about that later.
I rush down to the office and call my mom. "Mom, I think I'm sick. Can you take me home?" She quickly agrees and says she's on her way. Now days, she doesn't argue much with me. She probably knows I'm not sick, but she's coming to get me anyways. I sit in the office awkwardly until she texts me that she's here.
I rush out and hop into her car. "What's up sweetheart?" She asks right when I come in.
I sigh. "Camari was bothering me. I couldn't handle being in the same building as her anymore. I put my head down as my mom strokes my back.
"Don't worry, she's just jealous of how great you are. How about we go and grab some ice cream?" Classic mom. They always think that their children are the best.
"Sure, why not." I mumble.
Later
I flop down on my bed and think about what happened with Camari today. I'm gonna really regret standing up to her. I'm going to have to pay. But once again, terrifying memories flood my mind.
We were having night games at Indi's house at the time. Willa and I stuck together the entire time. "Come on guys, it's boring when you don't separate." Ember said. We just look at her and I thought 'Whatever. Willa needs me.' When we still didn't separate, the other girls started targeting us. We were playing 'Ghost in the Graveyard' and everyone tried to go for just one of us.
It was horrible. It was just Willa, Asia, and I left. The girls it rounded Willa up so that she was trapped. It was freaking her out. She was on the verge of tears and I had to do something about it. I ran up into the circle and covered Willa with my body. "Leave her alone. She never did anything to you." I said.
"Seriously Mae? Are you going to stand up for her? You have never stood up for me in your life. Why are you all of a sudden standing up for her?" Camari looked me straight in the eye with a smirk. I fell right in her trap.
I knew I had no choice. I didn't want to say 'Because she's going through hard times' or she would think that's the only reason I'm friends with her. But the thing I'm about to say will ruin the friendship of all my other friends. We stood in silence for awhile while I thought up what to say, hoping if I word it right, no one would be hurt.
"I'm standing up for Will because she has a real reason to be upset for. Haven't you noticed? You are being a jerk. Picking on her because she's vulnerable. But I should know. She isn't just a fragile girl with a lot of bad luck. She's really a really nice and fun person." I look at Willa. "She's probably the best person I know." I said the last part quietly so that no one but Willa could hear it.
"Bullshit." Camari said. With that, she huddled with her group and said something to them. I started running and gestured Willa to follow me. When Camari noticed us fleeing, she yelled, "Now!" With that, everyone started chasing after us. I was freaking out. She has gone way to far this time.
I kept running, going a little slower than I am able to so that I could stay next to Willa. But after a short time running away, Willa collapsed to the ground. I immediately stopped by her side. "I'm done. Life isn't worth it anymore." She lays there with her eyes closed. "Bring your worst Camari." She whispers to herself.
I kneel down next to her and say, "I'm right by your side." Our 'friends' come rushing up to us and they grab us by our arms and legs. I'm squirming and fighting against them, trying to get out of their grip. But Willa stays calm and doesn't struggle a bit. It really freaks me out because this isn't like her.
I feel something dark cover my eyes and realize they blindfolded me. They nearly dragged me for about five minutes until I was plopped down on what felt like a mattress. "Take their blindfolds off." I hear Camari say. I felt someone tie away my blindfold, tugging my hair a bit in the process.
I immediately try and get up to fight but they already grabbed my wrists and ankles, tying me down. "You know this is kidnapping." I say. "I could call the police and all of you will get in huge trouble."
"Well then that's good that we have your phones." Camari can't mess right in front of my face and waves the phones at me. I look to my right and see Willa laying there with her eyes closed. She doesn't even have restraints on.
"Camari, I think we've gone a little too far..." Indi says trailing off.
Camari gives her a death glare and sharply says, "I will decide when it's gotten out of hand. You will follow orders or else." Indi looks down at her feet and nods, cowering away. "Now that we got you here, let's get started."
