Book: Basic Instinct
Chapter 4: Dust To Dust
Word Count: 2271They walked back to the library in silence. They had lost a friend. Sure, Alec didn't know Jessie that well but they had had a few classes together. He could tell Buffy was full of guilt of not being able to save someone and Xander, well, he just looked broken. His best friend was no longer human. He was now monster and Alec didn't know if Xander understood what that meant. That they would have to kill Jessie.
"Did you find him?" Willow's hoepful voice entered his ear. It only made him feel more like crap.
Buffy shook her head sadly. "I'm sorry Willow. We were to late and they were waiting for us." She said.
Xander kicked over the bin with a loud bang. "I don't like vampires. I'm gonna take a stand here and say there not good." He said, angrily.
"No shit." Alec mumbled sarcastically. Buffy nudged him wanting him to cut Xander some slack. He did just lose his best friend.
"So, Giles, got anything that could make this day any worse." Buffy asked, sitting down next to Alec.
"How about the end of the world." Giles really didn't want to give the teenagers any more grief but knew it must be said.
Buffy sighed tiredly. "I knew I could count on you."
"This is what we know: Some 60 years ago, a very old, very powerful vampire came to this shore, not just to feed."
"He came 'cos this town's a mystical whoozit." She guessed.
Giles nodded. "Yes. The spanish who first settled here called it Boca del infierno. Roughly translated Hellmouth. It's sort of, a portal between this realitly and the next. This vampire hoped to open it."
"Bring the demons back." Alec said in realization. If all the demons in other dimenions were brought to earth. Let's just say that it would literally be hell on earth.
"End of the world." Xander said, shaking his head.
"But he blew it." Willow exclaimed. "Or, I mean, there was an earthquake that swallowed half the town and him too."
"You see, opening dimensional portals is a tricky buisness. Odds are he got himself stuck, rather like a cork in a bottle." Giles explained.
"And this harvest thing is to get him out?" Alec asked, with his eyebrows raised.
"It comes once in a century, on this night. The master can draw power from one of his minions while it feeds. Enough power to break free and open the portal. The minion is called the Vessal, and he beats this symbol." Giles drew a star like symbol on the whiteboard as he was talking.
"So, I dust anyone sporting that symbol, and no harvest." Buffy asked, standing up and walked over to her watcher.
Giles stuttered. "Simply put, yes."
