Chapter 1

569 17 10

Ba-Boom!
I woke up to the sound of thunder.
Shivering, I rolled over to snuggle with my loyal companion, Titan the black lab.
My hands feel around the blankets, searching for Titans soft body.
He's not there.
I roll out of bed, my bare feet hitting the cold tile floor.
"Titan?"
I called out softly, my voice echoing in the cavernous room.
I hear footprints of a dog coming towards me.
"There you are baby"
You said to Titan, stroking his soft fur.
"I thought I lost you"

The storm outside intensifies.
You clicked on the light, and the generators hum to life, casting feeble light across your bed. I glance at my watch.
4:30am
"Ok then, I guess I'm up now"
i say to Titan.
I look around the large room, seeing the organized piles of canned food casting strange shadows on the floor.
i made my bed neatly, and feed Titan his morning ration of dog food.
my stomach growls hungrily, so I decide to hunt through the food for breakfast.
it had taken a long time to organize the mountains of food, but all I had was time nowadays.
It had been 3 years since I'd last spoken to another human being.
My only companion was my childhood pet.
i lived a life of solitude.
I finally settled on a breakfast of stale cereal and canned milk. Yum.
how I missed fresh fruit. As I eat, I let my thoughts wander, and of course, they wander too exactly where I don't want them too.

3 years earlier

"Ok mom"
"No I feel fine"
"I'm on my way home right now"
"Im safe"
"I love you"
"Bye"
That was the last conversation I ever had with my mom. She died soon after I hung up. I raced home from school on my bike.
School had been declared closed due to the fact that everyone was sick, dying, or already dead.
No one had any idea what was going on.
one second you were sick, and the next, you were dead, drowned in your own blood.
Strangely enough, I wasn't sick.
When I got home, I found my mom.
She had died peacefully.
I buried her in our backyard, next to my 12 year old sister. No one should have to bury their younger sibling.
I sat down next to their graves and cried.
I cried until I couldn't cry anymore.
My mom and sister were gone.

I pulled my mind away from the sad memories. I couldn't be stuck in the past.
I listened for the storm, but heard nothing. It had passed.
I grabbed my coat and Titan, and went outside.

The smell of rain welcomed me. I breathed in deeply. Titan decided to play in the puddles.
I looked around the empty parking lot, and then at my home.
The ruined sign that once read Costco
now read something like C st o.
The other letters were long gone.
luckily, Arizona storms were mild, and the building had no damage.
i don't know what I would do if it was damaged.
I decided to do my daily chores.
clean the car.
count the food.
walk Titan and play fetch with him
go for a run.
after I finished the chores, I decided to go for a gas run.
i grabbed the keys and Titan, and drove off.
I should probably tell you that I am not a good driver.
I drive to the nearest abandoned gas station, and grab the gas cans.
Gasoline doesn't last long unless it was in a container.
Luckily, I stalked up on gasoline, and there's no where to go.
I looked at my watch. It was 10:36am
Time goes so slowly.
The days drag on.
After I got back to Costco, I looked at my calendar.
It was November 11th. That meant that my birthday was tomorrow.
I would be 18 years old.
I sighed to myself.
I missed people so much. I've never kissed anyone before. I've never even had a boyfriend.
What kind of 18 year old is a virgin?
Id always wanted to date someone, but I guess I would never have a chance.
Honestly, I would probably die a virgin.
I sat by the sole window in Costco, and stared out the window.

Most of the people I knew were dead.
I knew what I had to do.
I ran inside to pack my stuff.
I was going to Costco. I grabbed everything that wouldn't be at Costco.
Books, pictures, and other irreplaceable items. I would need to make a few stops.
I stopped, and looked at my dads gun safe. He had died 1 year ago in a car crash. I missed him terribly. He is with my mom and sister now. I knew the combination
35-12-7
The safe clicked open. I saw the pistol, and the longer rifle. I knew how to shoot, but it was only a precaution.
I grabbed the guns and the 15 boxes of ammo, and hoped in the car.
I barely knew how to drive. Titan leapt into the car, and I pulled out of the driveway. I looked at my house, and the surrounding houses. The virus had struck so fast, most people just died in their houses. I needed to go.
I saw few people on the road. I passed my best friends house. The lights were out. I added her to the growing list of the dead. I cried for the dead, and everything that died with them. all the lost Knowledge. I only almost crashed twice as the tears blurred my vision.
my body was raked with sobs. I looked away as I saw a dead woman lying on the road, blood coming out of her mouth.
I stopped the gun store, and grabbed a lot of ammo. I hoped the dead cashier wouldn't mind.
I also went to the pet store and filled the car up dog food for Titan.
Questions filled my head.
Why wasn't I sick or dying?
Why me?
Is anyone else alive?

Titans barking pulled me from my memories.
"he probably found another squirrel or something." I said to myself.
i walked outside to see what was the matter. I heard something odd.
it sounded like a motor, but all of my motors were off. I listened carefully, but the sound was gone.
