Chapter 11

The House Fire

"What the--" Aaron stops short, seeing the bright light of the burning flames.

"Oh my God!" Emery cried, scrambling to figure something out. The other group was in the dining room as well, save for Ethan.

The small fire soon began to grow, engulfing the wax of the orange candle and hiding it within the flames. They licked up, seeming to burn the wood of the hatch and spread across the carpet. Emery, her whole body shaking with blinding fear, ran into the kitchen, frantically looking for something to put out the fire. Seconds passed, and she only grew more panicked. She could hear the even more nervous voices of her friends, loudly communicating but none of them listening.

Although she knew that the fire wasn't in the living room, Emery couldn't help but worry about Ethan. Maybe he wasn't even in there. She dismissed the thought, her heart pounding.

In a split second thought, Emery grabbed the large metal bowl from the electric mixer and filled it with water, impatiently tapping her foot was the seconds went by. When her impatience peaked, she ripped the bowl from the sink, not bothering to turn the water off, and hurried to the dining room. She awkwardly threw the contents of the bowl in the direction of the fire. It succeeded in putting out some of the flames, but they still inched closer to the table, and proceeded up the hatch.

"You could help, you know!" Emery exclaimed frantically, hurrying back into the kitchen. Soon after, Aaron and Amily followed, rummaging through the cabinets for big bowls to carry water with. Emery turns from the sink, where she was filling the bowl back up, to Christy. She held a large mop bucket in her arms.

"Move," she commanded simply and Emery picked up the bowl and rushed back to the living room. Christy followed, and this process went on for what seemed like hours to the kids, moving back and forth from the sink to the dying fire. After it was out, the six wiped the beads of sweat from their brows, caused from the blazing heat.

"Hey," Emery said breathlessly, her throat dry and her heart pounding. "Where are Charlotte and Lucas?"
